I think all these people saying it's impossible to have trouble finding women to be friends with unless you're an idiot or sexist must either live in a big or diverse place or have more widespread interests. I meet a lot more guys with whom I share interests than I meet women. I have awesome girl friends and my closest friends are women but I just don't run into women like them as often.

There is nothing wrong with, and sometimes valid reasons for, not having female friends (or only having one or two of them).

There IS something wrong with:
1) Bashing women as a whole;
2) Writing women off altogether; and
3) Bragging about how you don't befriend women.

Just came in to say Lily Allen is pretty much a complete bitch by the sounds of it. She wrote/published a song ridiculing and humiliating her brother for being a lazy drug addict in his teens, despite her doing and selling drugs in her teens even though she was rich anyway. If it just happens to be that you fell into a group of friends and they are all the same gender, so be it. If it is because you think you are "oh so speshul" and "not like other girls" and "no one but guys understands me and shares my interests" I think you're talking bullshit and are ridiculous. People of both genders share your interests, I guarantee you.* You are not amazing and wonderful because you don't act like a stereotypical girl. * Unless you are Hannibal Lecter and your interests are killing people and making gourmet food out of them. In which case, I am fairly sure that pretty much no one of either gender shares your interests.

Seriously, people don't see why bragging "I don't have female friends" and "I'm not like other girls" is misogynistic? The bit about feminism I can take or leave because third-wave feminism has yet to take over the more ignorant white feminists (white feminism being an ideology, not an attack on feminists who are white, can we stop having this conversation please?) and people might not want to associate themselves with feminism in its current state.

(For people who are wondering why more sane feminists don't call out the less sane feminists, it's because by the time we've been feminists long enough to see that they actually exist outside of the strawman projection by more toxic MRAs, we'v already realized that we won't be changing anybody's mind if they aren't questioning if they're wrong, and so we don't bother. We're too tired shielding ourselves from enemy fire to also block friendly fire, so to speak.)

But to argue that men and women are equal now...I don't even know where to start. The fact that boner pills are insured but birth control isn't? The fact that we're still paid less for the same job with the same experience? The fact that I still feel awkward speaking when I'm the only woman in the room specifically for that reason? If you think men and women are treated equally, you need to get glasses, hearing aids, and maybe an entirely new central nervous system.

The problem with these kinds of discussions is that there are generally two kinds of women (and hell, yes, men too - I've met men who do the reverse who could land in these categories) who have few female friends.

1) Women who aren't like most other women because they have largely (socialized) "masculine" interests and find it hard to meet women with those interests. Those women they do find they have no problem befriending.

2) Women who "aren't like other women" - because according to them "other women" are bitchy and catty and humorless and they are, like, sooooooo not. They're cool, like a guy! So they go out of their way not to befriend women.

But when we (rightly) criticize 2) a lot of 1)s pour out of the woodwork to justify their (justifiable) lack of female friends and otherwise derail a valid discussion about internalized misogyny. And I say this as a 1) myself - it's not about you. It's not about me. Would you befriend a rare women who did share your interests, who you did click with? Then it's not about you. Stop taking offense where there is none.

That said, please don't lump 1)s and 2)s in the same group. There are plenty of men I've known (especially if they like fashion or theatre) who have almost all female friends because of their interests. It just happens.

...In the case of Lily Allen though there's basically zero doubt that we're talking about 2) here. My hobbies are video games, tabletop gaming, sci-fi, diving, working out, and airsoft sports, and I can still find some women who share those interests with whom I click. Lily Allen likes dresses and makeup and fashion and singing, and she can't find female friends? I would've called bullshit even before the "I'm not like other girls" nail in the coffin.

I wonder where all these anons who only meet "stuck-up, traditionally feminine bitches" live because where I am, it's the opposite. I run the gamut of having masculine/feminine interests and I've never had a problem meeting girls with the same interests and almost all of my friends are female. Whereas most of the men I meet are usually jerks with insufferable, offensive opinions or creeps who just want to get in my pants, especially when they find out I like video games. I realize that could be construed as bragging, but it's actually just annoying as fuck since I'm asexual and genuinely want male friends.
