Depressing as it might sound: be unattractive. Or just average.

I was kind of an ugly duckling in school, and I could make male friends at the drop of a hat. (They never, ever wanted to be anything more, even when I did.) Then I went through a hot phase in college, and suddenly! Not a single man I met actually wanted to be my friend, even if they approached me to "be my friend" they meant to use that as a backdoor to weasel into my affections and became irate/ditched me "as a friend" if that didn't pan out. Most just didn't even bother with the pretense. After one conversation about video games or comics or sci-fi that was totally fun and interesting, they'd ask me out. And if I rejected them, that was it. They'd never talk to me again.

Which was super gross, and I really started to hate it, and cultivated mostly female friendships after that. But now that I'm older and married (to one of my male friends from back before the "hot" phase) I am ~surprise~ able to make friendships with men again. It's ridiculous. Being less attractive and lonely sucked, but at least men would give me the time of day for any other reason than a potential fuck.

I'm really lucky in that not every guy I met has treated me this way, but I can relate to this somewhat. I became way more attractive after high school and meet a lot of guys pursuing my interests (especially YGO) and can't count the number of times I've gotten "You're a chick who duels? Hot!!" and can't see me as a human first. Of course, I have met some awesome people through dueling as well, both male and female. I guess you've got to take the bad with the good...
