SACRIFICE THE PERSONAL COMFORT LEVELS YOU'VE DEVELOPED FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE TO MAKE A POLITICAL STATEMENT WITH THE COMPANY YOU CHOOSE TO KEEP IS SO FEMINIST.

Ah, okay.

I'm going to make it a point to avoid all black people from now on, because in my personal experience they are all violent thugs.

Uh. At least one person on here has said they don't really have friendships with men because of shitty experiences.

Re: diff

Ah yes, knew that would be one of the replies. But for people who really feel this way and aren't just using racist strawmen, I understand that! If you have had bad experiences with black people, it's understandable (not rational, but understandable) to have that fear. But also understand that believing a category of people are actual criminals, not just unlikable, is more far fetched and much more harmful to people in that category if you talk about how they're all like that. So nice try but nope, not comparable.

Re: diff

(Anonymous) 2014-03-19 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
But it is comparable. In fact, half of what you wrote before that line was arguing that you see it as comparable.

Were you looking for a different word?

Re: diff

(Anonymous) 2014-03-19 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
You're right, it's not comparable. Black people don't make up half the world's population.

Wait. You really don't see anything wrong with the statement "All women are catty and bitches and going to stab me in the back, so I'm only going to hang out with men"? It's one thing if your interests align with people who just happen to tend to be one gender or the other. It's another thing if you demonize a gender and say that you are better than the other people of that gender and thus can only be friends with people of the other gender.

Re: diff

(Anonymous) 2014-03-19 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
That's not how the statement was worded. As long as you don't use misogynistic language about it, no, I actually don't see anything wrong with not wanting to be friends with girls if all your friendships with girls ended badly.

As long as you don't use misogynistic language about it...

Ah, subtle, gentle bigotry, you rear your head again.

People can be remarkably racist without using even remotely racist language.

People can be misogynistic without using misogynistic language. Writing off an entire gender...that's problematic right there.

It's just shitty friendships.

Get a fucking grip.

Personal comfort levels >>>>>> getting your head out of your ass, obviously.

I just don't feel comfortable around gay people, okay? A lesbian hit on me once so I've avoided them ever since!

Re: diff

Yeah no, what you're doing is no different than holding bullshit prejudices against PoC, LGBT people, etc. You don't fucking write off an entire group of people just because you had the misfortune of running into a few bad eggs out of the group unless you're a moronic, bigoted asshole. Literally every individual person is different from another.

Re: diff

(Anonymous) 2014-03-19 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
And certainly not when you realize that all happened when they were kids or teens. Pretty much every adolescent is awful to someone. People are just shittier when they're teens. But avoiding friendships with women? Now you *are* the problem.

Re: diff

(Anonymous) 2014-03-19 01:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Unless it's about men. Because "I have had bad experiences with some men" is for a lot of people a perfectly valid reason to hate all men.

Re: diff

(Anonymous) 2014-03-19 02:44 pm (UTC)(link)
And those people are wrong.

Re: diff

(Anonymous) 2014-03-19 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, they are. But it's still the most common kind of "exception to the rule" you run into when it comes to those kinds of generalisations.
