Welp, looks like I'm going to have to stop reading this comm because of this: http://das-sporking.livejournal.com/824568.html A daily dot article as a source? Really? And I don't like the direction the comm is going in to make suppositions about the author.

The linked Livejournal baffles me. Beyond any resentment of things Green has or hasn't done to help minority writers, the author seems to resent him for existing as a white writer who's more popular than minority writers. It's like the author thinks it's inherently wrong and bad for a white writer to become so popular relative to this and that minority writer.

Also, since when is John Green the most influential YA writer? Does J.K. Rowling not count as a YA writer after she wrote one book for adults?

The writer is doing a "sporking" or kind of analysis of John Green's books. And seems to be making a lot of suppostions about John Green and why he sucks instead of analyzing the text on it's own terms. I think it's leading to a lot of confirmation bias in whether his books are good or not.

Yeah, I'm not really sure where the YA fandom's hateboner for John Green came from but I've noticed that's it's pretty big.

Agreed on your points. And the author seems to be using kettle logic. They make this comment:http://das-sporking.livejournal.com/824568.html?thread=21927160#t21927160 after showing a bunch of tweets where John Green does exactly that.

OP
I think you're right about the kettle logic. The whole thing is a mess.

Thanks to you, I learned something today...I had never heard of 'kettle logic' before. Thank you!

And I don't like the direction the comm is going in to make suppositions about the author.

I thought that was the point? :/ Not defending it or decrying, I don't even know if that's true, I just remember some of the Mary Sue sporks and they were pretty presumptuous.

Re: das-sporking

(Anonymous) 2014-03-18 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
It's getting more prevalent. It was one of the rules that sporkers didn't say too much bad stuff about the authors aside from their writing, but now it seems to be open season on some published writers.

Rubbish. How far back into the misty past are you reaching? IME, sporkers have always been ready to attack the author along with the work.

Why not a daily dot article as a source? Were you under the impression that sporking was a form of respectable criticism? Or, God forbid, a form of witty ranting? Anyone who's still sporking at 30+ needs to seriously examine their life and choices. Same goes for anyone who reads that tedious shit.
