Ron/Hermione: I just don't get why either of them would want to be with someone who makes them so miserable. I get that its the trope, but I honestly can't imagine wanting to be with someone I got into screaming matches with over everything. So I guess I get shipping it but I don't get the actual relationship.

Doctor/Rose: He's more than 900 years old. She's 19. I get the attraction between them but not why it was actual love and not just creepy.

Hook/Emma: Ugh. No. This is the only canon ship in any of my current fandoms that I actively loath. There are lots of canon ships I don't ship, but this one makes me actively sick. I don't get it, I don't want to get it, and every scene they have together on screen I skip over.

That's occurred to me with all Doctor pairings, honestly. Maybe because he is still technically a different Doctor, that's supposed to make it less creepy?

I only really ship him with people who are old enough to be mature adults, though. There is still a big gap, but 19 just seems really young to me. Age gaps creep me out more when the younger person is young enough that their brain hasn't fully developed.

That is why life is good in Team Doctor/Master ;D

...I mean, I freely acknowledge that that ship has other massive issues amongst it, not least attempting to kill each other multiple times, but at least the age difference isn't one? Ahahah. Haha. Heh...

Yessss, Doctor/Master. <3

Although I actually ship Doctor/Master and Doctor/Rose equally for very different reasons.

So after I wrote this I ended up watching part two of End of Time again. "Get out of the way"... I'll just be over here, dying slightly inside.

I never really could get into Doctor/Rose! It's mostly the age difference thing - the few human or human-ish companions I do ship him with tend to have all sorts of extenuating circumstances around them - Jack is immortal and, at some point, OLDER than the Doctor, and Fitz is... well, that whole thing was weird, heh.

haha those first two are OTPs of mine...though I never thought of Doctor/Rose as a permanent thing (and disclaimer I haven't watched most of Ten's episodes)

Ha. Yes, I know. And I do get why people ship them. I just don't get how the relationships are supposed to actually work.

Ron/Hermione made a lot of sense to me. They bickered while they were maturing, and I think their relationship will always be turbulent, but I think it will also be rich and rewarding. They compliment each other well.

Doctor/Rose...I don't really see it as a relationship. Just two people with vastly different life experiences who have a crush on each other. I have a very hard time seeing the Doctor actually dating anyone, or imagining that their relationship progressed physically beyond kissing and hand-holding.

(Also, in my defense, I thought Rose was in her 20s at first)

I don't really read Ron and Hermione as getting into screaming matches all the time? I mean, I don't ship it in any meaningful way, so it's more or less whatever. I'm just interested by the differing perceptions of their relationship - to me, it read more as affectionate bickering, with actual full-on blowups as exceptions fueled by teenage hormones, not as the norm.

Yeah, and a lot of it - while often taken to unnecessary levels of hurt - came from a righteous place. Both of them could be hopelessly clueless, and they called one another out on it.

Re: Canon Pairings You Don't Get

To me, affectionate bickering would be something like, I guess, early seasons House/Cuddy. Like they say things to each other that are rather nasty, but as a joke and clearly neither of them don't take it seriously. Hermione actually runs away in tears several times, and at one point she physically attacks Ron with birds.

I guess I feel like JKR was trying to go for the affectionate bickering trope but ended up going to far. So I can see why people ship it, but to me I don't get how it would actually work.

I think a lot of writers don't understand the difference between bickering and bantering. Bantering is usually what they're trying for. Both people are amused and willing to concede when the other has made a good joke even when it's at their expense. But bickering is motivated by more negative emotions.

Pretty much this. And I personally can't get past that to ship something. I've matured enough to see why other people ship and to understand the trope, but bickering to me is such a turn off. I'm not even a huge fan of banter, but it can be cute if done right. And when its banter, its clear that both people are enjoying it and are not making each other miserable.

Interesting. yeah, I guess I just see the things where they are actually fighting as more of an abnormal state in their relationship because they're at a tough time and they're teenagers and all the rest of that. And I think outside of those fights they do the thing where they say things as a joke that they don't take seriously.

But different points of view I guess!

I thought HBP pushed Hermione way too far into the jealous clingy girl trope. I know that she's emotional, but I couldn't believe JKR would actually make her physically attack Ron just for liking some other girl. She never even talked to him about their feelings or anything, and they're supposed to be best friends!

Wasn't the bird thing only in the movie? I tend to completely disregard them so maybe that's why I'm not seeing how much it is Ron and Hermione actually fought. IDk, it's been a looong while since I read the books, but I'm only recalling the fight after the Yule Ball, and probably something to do with Lavender.

Nope. The bird thing was in the HBP book. And it actually seemed more physically violent than it did in the movie.

IIRC the bird thing was in the fight over Lavender.

All of this. I spend the entire time going don't-want-don't-want-don't-want at the screen. Of all the things on this show, this is the thing I want them to stop doing now.

I have trouble shipping the Doctor with anyone because of a. the power imbalance and b. I have trouble getting invested in ships I know that are doomed (the doctor won't stay with anyone, it's not in the nature of the show.)

And I definitely can't ship him with his young companions. I always felt like Rose's feelings for him were a bit naive and she thought she knew him better then she really did (evidenced in episodes like school reunion.) I appreciate their bond but I refuse to accept them as romantic love.
