I'm glad there's a cool discussion around this.

I agree that the science is silly and fun but I've some acquaintances that are 100% Star Wars fans who constantly tear into how "dumb" Star Trek is. I never have the patience or gumption to stand up to them- also I would probably get upset if they just kept taking the piss, and that would be weird.

I'm glad to see so many people come out with love for the show. I think I've just been surrounded by negativity.

That's probably it, really.

Trek fans do riff on the science in the show, but it's affectionate riffing. I think maybe you need to find some people like that.

And seriously, it really isn't like Star Wars fans have a higher ground if people are talking about science in sci-fi...

Man, I've met those fans too. They're obnoxious and tend to just be bullies. I'm not even kidding. I've seen a few get fired at conventions over it. Anyway, when they rag on you all you have to say is, "My show had a black woman on the bridge during the 60s. Yours had midi-chlorians. Shush your face. You don't like the show? Fine, but neither is better than the other for any objective reason. Now let's eat cookies." I put cookies but you can insert any food you want.

Go find new people. Find happy people who will riff with love.

I've never understood why there needs to be such a rivalry between Star Trek and Star Wars anyway. They're both highly influential, groundbreaking science-fiction stories of highly variable quality depending on the writers. But they're different genres which bring different things to the table. Star Wars is a classic fantasy story set over a space backdrop, Star Trek is a story of adventure and exploration.

I like Star Trek a little more because it presents a very idealistic view of the future - yes, there will still be trouble, and there will still be bad people, but we'll grow out of our prejudices and find that the universe has just as many things in it that are wonderful and positive as things that are terrifying and negative.

I grew up with TOS Star Trek and the original Star Wars, and I love them both to pieces, in different ways. But I don't look to either one of them for science lessons.

have an homage to Star Trek from no less than James Tiptree:
