I've never understood why there needs to be such a rivalry between Star Trek and Star Wars anyway. They're both highly influential, groundbreaking science-fiction stories of highly variable quality depending on the writers. But they're different genres which bring different things to the table. Star Wars is a classic fantasy story set over a space backdrop, Star Trek is a story of adventure and exploration.

I like Star Trek a little more because it presents a very idealistic view of the future - yes, there will still be trouble, and there will still be bad people, but we'll grow out of our prejudices and find that the universe has just as many things in it that are wonderful and positive as things that are terrifying and negative.
