(Anonymous) 2014-03-19 02:46 am (UTC)(link)Nah, seriously though, my rage-filled loathing of the song aside, I think there's a bit of a difference between this and a goodbye ballad. Singing in a musical is totally a free-action, but I'm kind of inclined to agree with upthread--it's a poorly placed song because it grinds the action right to a halt (but not for dramatic farwelling purposes like "Little Fall of Rain"), which isn't always a bad thing in a musical, but in the last third of your movie/play/what-have-you, it's generally a good idea to pick up the pace to increase the sense of urgency.
I mean, I don't see anywhere else they could put that song, but it's just...THERE. Like running into a wall. They pick it up alright-ish after it's over, but for those three minutes, it just threw me straight out. And I think even if I liked the song, if it was still the same vibe (a romance and/or comedy number right there) it would've felt just as jarring. A dramatic or tension-filled song right there would work better, since they've introduced the ticking clock and want to keep their audience aware of it.
Then again, I kind of like "A Guy Like You" from Hunchback, which has the exact same problem (goofy about-romance song toward the back-end of the movie, just as things get dire. No ticking clock there, though). But it's pretty out-of-place too.
