I thought it was okay, it just bugged me that Anna was running out of time and Kristoph couldn't take two seconds to say "Yo can we sing later this is kinda serious." but that's the kind of thing that would've bothered me even as a kid.

It's a musical. Singing is a free action. :)

I think you kind of have to look at musicals like time freezes while everyone sings and dances. Frozen isn't the only one that has a time problem to deal with.

IA though I think it's easier to look past time issues with on-stage musicals as opposed to movies.

It's not a "suspension of disbelief in musicals" problem, it's a pacing and storytelling problem. The timing, placement, and irrelevance of the trolls' song killed any tension that Anna's affliction might have built.

Look, I get that the song wasn't everyone's cup of tea, but it's not irrelevant when they're singing about half the moral of the fucking movie.

I'm assuming you're talking about the last half of the song?

The song is irrelevant because they're singing it to Anna, who is literally the last person in the movie who needs to hear it. It contributes absolutely nothing.

Looking at the lyrics I realize "half" is a very generous description.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-19 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, they're singing it to the audience, because 1) that's who all the songs in the musical are being sung to and 2)that's who the moral of a fairytale is for.

That's just, like, your opinion, man.

(For the record, not trying to brush you off, just doesn't make much sense to argue further because we disagree on that point. No hard feelings etc etc.)

Wait a minute -- one of the reasons that Anna got zapped in the first (well, second) place was because she was so sure that her being there would fix whatever was wrong with Elsa that she sang her reprise right over Elsa's massive freakout and got caught in the crossfire. And, when the trolls start in with their singing, she's still expecting smooches with Prince "Ten Minutes Ago I Saw You" to make everything better. She might literally be the only person in the movie who needed to hear that song.

What. Are we talking about the same song? The "To fix people love them" song?

That's a good point.

It's like how a dying character whose wounds shouldn't allow more than a pained gargle to have a three-minute good-bye ballad. Just repeat to yourself, it's just a musical!

My suspension of disbelief just has slightly higher standards.

I bet that snowman wasn't even made of real snow.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-19 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Why, oh why, is there now this trend of people taking "suspension of disbelief" to mean "MUST BE TOTALLY 100% TRUE-TO-LIFE AND REAL?"

omg what

"Though I die, the resistance lives... on." *gasp*
"...Shit!"

Don't you fret...Monsieur Kristoff...

Nah, seriously though, my rage-filled loathing of the song aside, I think there's a bit of a difference between this and a goodbye ballad. Singing in a musical is totally a free-action, but I'm kind of inclined to agree with upthread--it's a poorly placed song because it grinds the action right to a halt (but not for dramatic farwelling purposes like "Little Fall of Rain"), which isn't always a bad thing in a musical, but in the last third of your movie/play/what-have-you, it's generally a good idea to pick up the pace to increase the sense of urgency.

I mean, I don't see anywhere else they could put that song, but it's just...THERE. Like running into a wall. They pick it up alright-ish after it's over, but for those three minutes, it just threw me straight out. And I think even if I liked the song, if it was still the same vibe (a romance and/or comedy number right there) it would've felt just as jarring. A dramatic or tension-filled song right there would work better, since they've introduced the ticking clock and want to keep their audience aware of it.

Then again, I kind of like "A Guy Like You" from Hunchback, which has the exact same problem (goofy about-romance song toward the back-end of the movie, just as things get dire. No ticking clock there, though). But it's pretty out-of-place too.

Totally agree with you re: "A Guy Like You". I mean, I sort get the need to lighten things up again because, you know, Disney, and I do love how it's immediately followed by Quasimodo getting his heart crushed... but yeah. Not the greatest song to insert when the scene preceded it is this one.

To be fair he did, trolls didn't listen :/

(Anonymous) 2014-03-19 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
He also didn't know she was dying and just assumed it was something they could fix.
