as nursejoy said, anything by toni morrison. beloved in particular, it's her best work

1984 is also a very good one but I wouldn't recommend it to everyone because holy shit that book can reduce you to an emotional black hole for a few hours to a few days the first time you read it, and I say that as someone who's not emotional at all

if you want a plotty story with no soul-crushing elements, read the great gatsby

The Great Gatsby is not a book I'd recommend if you want to avoid a crushed soul. At least not if you're American.

idk when I read Great Gatsby in high school I was just like "UGH WHAT IS THIS? EGGS? THIS IS STUPID." and when I read it in college I was like "Oh wow Nick is super gay. Jordan is probably gay too. Daisy should just run off with Jordan. Also Kate Beaton." So not really that soul crushing.

hahaha the egg thing, yessssss

I had such an insurmountable mental block against loving that book in high school because of EAST EGG WTF.

I got over it eventually and now I love Fitzgerald's other books, but Gatsby is still my least favorite, even though it's probably structurally the best, for no really good reason. It's probably the residual snark from my annoying teenage brain going EGGGGGGGSSSS PRECIOUS and then crashing the first 10 times I tried to read it.

Fitzgerald can be soul-crushing or not for me, depending entirely on my frame of mind.

really, why? i mean it's a criticism of the society of the time but it's not super bleak or anything

i'm not american so maybe that's why i don't get it

It still holds up as a strong critique of modern American values, particularly anything and everything to do with the "American Dream." I couldn't find any way to reasonably argue with its criticisms, as much as I wanted to, and since it doesn't really present a meaningful alternative, I felt a bit empty afterwards. I still don't know how I might respond properly to it.

I thought Beloved was the most bizarre thing I'd ever read

Great Gatsby was quite boring

but my recommendations are probably not the best ones. I'm a terrible abstract thinker haha

I read both of those in the same year (10th grade), and I remember The Great Gatsby being a lot more depressing than 1984. 1984 was terrifying, but I didn't find it particularly depressing.

Then again, I also found 1984 a lot more interesting, so that probably helped.
