Lord of the Flies sucks, though, OP. I mean, it really, really, sucks. It is a terrible book. I still regret reading that book for school. Awful, awful, book. Bleagh.

Beg pardon? I'm not entirely sure what you're talking about. What did you dislike so much about it?

I do think Lord of the Flies is best read in conjunction with Bless the Beasts and Children by Glendon Swarthout. They present completely opposite messages that are both deserving of evaluation, and with only one, the evaluation is incomplete. (I think the same thing about V for Vendetta and Psycho-Pass.)

Actually, that is interesting, maybe I will check out that other book. I should have clarified that it is not the writing in Lord of the Flies that is terribad/awful, it is the whole situation/premise and what it all comes down to, in the end, that is just awful.

I get that is supposed to be the point, but I just found the book...devoid of hope...? Does that make sense? Like, I am not looking for it to be happy-clappy and everyone-gets-along, but it was just relentless in how awful everything was, and never let up, not even a little bit, all the way through, without even a little glimmer of daylight.

TL;DR: Too bleak for me personally.

I felt the same way anon, but I do think it's an important read. It so neatly expresses the artificial nature of our societies and how people (especially kids) will revert back to a more tribal state without that artifice.
