That's without even mentioning how ground-breaking it was socially (ie. Kirk & Uhura kissing)

People hold up that kiss as groundbreaking, but how many people actually remember they were forced into it?

They were, but that's about the only way they could get it through on TV in that time period (even then, they still fought with the network over it).

Similarly, with DS9's lesbian kiss in the 90s, they were able to get it through because technically, Dax's ex used to be a man, so it was portrayed as a heterosexual relationship even though they were both women in the present.

Ahh, well when you put it that way, I see what you mean.

No, Dax was the man. The ex was a woman both times.

Thanks for the correction; it's been awhile since I've seen it. Either way, they presented it as heterosexual.

That's not what Nichelle Nichols said. She said Bill just went for it and the writers pulled him aside and tried to convince him it was too controversial.

I think mimi-sardinia means they characters were forced into (it's been a while since I watched TOS so I can't remember).

I don't know if it's true, but I heard that they tried to make them (the actors) do a fake kiss without lips touching to air (so they could say they weren't really kissing), but Shatner intentionally messed up those takes.

Ah, right. That makes sense.

I've heard the cast sometimes had issues with Bill Shatner but I have to tell you, whatever diva tendencies he may or may not have had/has, when it counts, for the betterment of humanity, that guy IS AWESOME.

I love him.

I'm not talking about the actors, I mean the storyline. Kirk and Uhura were under the influence of someone who could control minds.

Someone explained that was probably what you meant, now I get it lol Yeah a lot of people probably never watched the episode, they just heard about the filming of it. Speaking of, I can't even remember the last time I watched Original Series :P Recently it's been either TNG or Voyager
