(Anonymous) 2014-03-19 04:26 am (UTC)(link)All your arguments for why Ereri is shipped works so much better for Mikasa x Levi. Mikasa is also a popular character, she is the poster girl of SnK. She is a better candidate for being Levi's prodigy because she is skilled with 3dgm and swords where Eren's biggest contribution is in his titan shifting abilities, and what can Levi teach him about that? Oh, and there added bonus that Mikasa does not flinch when he enters the room. Levi might be stronger than her but she is more on equal ground with him than Levi.
According to what you said, they have the same appeal to people. Then why is Eren x Levi so much more popular? Because they are both male. Because of yaoi fangirls who make up most of the fandom. Not because of chemistry. There is nothing unique about Eren x Levi except that Levi has to babysit him and potentially kill him if he goes berserk.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-19 05:09 am (UTC)(link)I mean, ok, I get you're an ereri hater so I'm going to back away (and chemistry is subjective, I mean there are loads of pairings that people ship that I think have -10 chemistry, doesn't mean other people don't see it).
And wtf with the flinching thing? Are you even reading the manga because he doesn't actually flinch at all...? I mean, okay, maybe he's not ~enthused to see Levi and there aren't flowers and bubbles every time their eyes meet, but he doesn't show any negative emotions (except at first when in chapter 53 when Levi was ragging on about how their situation sucked but that's because he was disappointed in himself, not because he felt threatened I don't think, and later he seemed listening attentively and didn't look particularly bothered after the first few seconds).
Hell, I think Hanji creeps him out way more than Levi does.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-19 05:14 am (UTC)(link)I think they meant that Levi would have more to teach to Mikasa than he does to Eren (yes he given him advice once or twice, but I don't know if that qualifies him a mentor for Eren) vs. Levi actually being more of a mentor to Mikasa in canon.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-19 05:25 am (UTC)(link)Hell, I'd probably ship RivaMika if they got more interaction in canon so I could get a handle on how their dynamic would work, because I think they'd be cool together and I think Mikasa needs to distance from Eren just a bit.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-19 05:46 am (UTC)(link)Ok, I see what you mean.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-19 05:22 am (UTC)(link)...I guess he taught Eren to clean?
Maybe it has to do with being generally outcast/disliked by society.
But Eren's not that bad at 3DMG, he finished 5th in his class, remember? He's not a natural at it like some, but he's a hard worker and it paid off. No way he'd make top 10 if he was that bad at it.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-19 05:40 am (UTC)(link)I do see Levi as one of the few adult figures in Eren's life (although I personally don't think Levi has yet to reach out to Eren all that much), but I don't know if I particularly see him as a mentor.
I do find Levi and Eren's relationship interesting, I just feel like fandom exaggerates what it actually has been in canon so far.
True about Eren not being terrible with 3DMG if he made it into the top ten. Although I'm assuming it was Eren being relatively good at everything, over him being particularly good with 3DMG. Because in action he's hasn't been that great.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-19 05:52 am (UTC)(link)I think that mentor is more of a shorthand for adult figure, really... and in this case, adult figure at least trying to exercise some form of positive influence.
But fandom exaggerating relationships is what fandom does. I mean, any time you have a non-canon ship, they're exaggerating the relationship into romance, you know?
So in this case, shipping ereri means that you find their dynamic interesting and that you would like to see it turned into a romance, because you feel the characters have potential for an interesting romantic dynamic.
(look, fandom makes Armin out to be a tactical genius the likes which this earth has never seen, and most of his ideas so far, while sound, are hardly earth-shatteringly brilliant)

(Anonymous) 2014-03-19 09:22 am (UTC)(link)The thing is, though, to me talking about Levi being a positive influence would be extrapolation as well. Let's be fair, SNK is not very characterization-heavy at all. So I figure that shippers a)think both Levi and Eren are interesting, b) see under-utilized potential for Levi being a positive influence on Eren, and c) think that they would be even more interesting in a romantic relationship trying to work things out.
I mean it's the difference between shipping and canon. Yeah, canonically all you have are some hints or ideas or what-if-maybes, but people who like the ship build romantic interest on those hints, flesh them out, and bam!ship. I mean this is shipping 101, it's true for any pairing ever.
I mean what about all those pairs of characters who barely talked to each other? I mean, what about Jean/Marco??? who did not interact very much in canon at all? But I get where the shippers are coming from - they see the bits of potential between Jean and Marco and build on it.
