I haven't seen Overboard since I was like 10 and so can't remember much about it. But I did rewatch While You Were Sleeping recently, which seems to have a similar premise - Sandra Bullock allows a man (who she has an obsessive crush on) to believe he has amnesia and has forgotten that they're engaged, when in reality they have never even spoken a word to each other.

However, While You Were Sleeping works without leaving a bad taste in my mouth for a few reasons:
1. She does not engineer the deception; it is a misunderstanding that she later doesn't clear up because she doesn't want to hurt his family. Oh, and his godfather works it out and doesn't tell, because he knows she means no harm - so the weight of maintaining the deception doesn't fall solely on her shoulders.
2. The story is more about her falling in love with his family (and in particular the man's brother, sexy, sexy Bill Pullman) - and in the process realising how delusional her original crush was because the man turns out to be a completely different person than who she imagined.
3. She voluntarily reveals the lie to the man and his family because she knows it's the right thing to do.
