The way you define "relationship" as "romance" and separate all fiction into being either about characters all on their own or romance -- friendships, family relationships, rivalries, and all other kinds of interpersonal relationships apparently don't count-- REALLY freaks me out. What kind of a twisted person are you that you think only romance counts as a relationship?

I'm not so much freaked out as just ??? but othetwise: this. How characters relate to other people is usually a significant part of what makes them interesting (or not interesting). It's one of the major ways a character's personality is revealed. Few characters exist in a vacuum and the vast majority of a character's interpersonal relationships will not be romantic.

Yes, all this.

OP's just probably using it as shorthand. Just like shipping comes from relationship. Or when two people say they're in a relationship.

Chill the fuck out.

Um, they're using "the relationship" as a shorthand to reference the romance they previously brought up, which makes perfect sense in context. That's why it's "the relationship", not "relationships" in general. What kind of poor reading comprehension do you possess that makes you think this?
