Wait. This is common in real life? People have hitherto unknown relatives stomping into their lives all the time? I know somebody above thread mentioned it, but I figured that was just them.

I'm not joking. Does this really happen?

Yes. I met my older half-brother (Dad's previous marriage) when I was 22, never knew he existed until then.

He's JUST LIKE my Dad. Weird.

I'm looking at the comments and apparently this happens a lot more often than I would've guessed.

I am the long lost family member, since my mother kept me from my father's family.

Oh yeah. We've had several unknown relatives turn up out of the woodwork. We're second cousins! I'm your great-great uncle! Etc.

It helps that the English side of my family don't talk much, so literally anyone in England could be my relative and I wouldn't know.

I know I have a couple hundred 3ed cousins, and I know where most of my first cousins live. Someone running into one of their cousins is not a unexpected thing for me.

Well apparently a lot of celebrities apparently have ended up having surprise!relatives. Even Oprah Winfrey discovered a long - lost sister.

I had something like this happen to me. Apparently my dad's sister gave up a daughter when she was in high school and they didn't reconnect until years later. My parents never told me about it, so I spent about twenty minutes talking to her at a wedding shower once trying to figure out if I should know her name or if she was from the groom's side.

A colleague learned in her late twenties that she had an older half-sister.
She received an email with an old picture of her dad, "Hello, I'm looking for the man on this picture who has the same last name as you. Would you know him, by chance?".

Turned out her dad had had a fling in a neighbor country. I can't remember if he was already married to my colleague's mother, or if he knew he had a child over there. I think he knew.

So, yeah, it happens.
