(Anonymous) 2014-03-20 12:37 am (UTC)(link)it contributes to the mindset that 'queer' (and 'gay', 'bi', 'trans', etc) is just a fun label to play around with (or to use as a way to escape tumblr hate, in this case), but for some of us that's a big part of our identity. Community is kind of a big deal for many of us and since we're spread out all over the place we turn to the internet to find that sense of community. So on a large scale, it makes it that much more difficult for us to be taken seriously, and on a small scale, finding out the truth about a 'queer' person you confided in about those things can be really hurtful.
men don't "have to" lie. I know a lot of guys (right here on this very comm!) who say they're guys and go on participating in fandom the way they want and if they get comments on tumblr they either take the criticism, if it's valid, or mock the stupid tumblr hate, if it's just stupid tumblr hate. or you know you could always turn off anon. or just delete stupid messages. I hardly get any hatemail on tumblr because the few times I did, I deleted it without acknowledging it.
This dude doesn't even have to say ANYTHING about his identity. He could just reblog stuff, maybe leave comments if he wants. Never mention his gender or real name at all.
