Yeah, the hinting makes all the difference.

On my favorite show, they introduced an estranged wife for one character in the second season and a never-before-seen half-brother for the same character in the fourth. The wife ended up being a decent character, and it fit with her husband's character that he'd have a wife he'd never mentioned, but I never quite got over how much of an asspull her introduction seemed to be. However, there was a single throwaway line in an early season about the original character knowing that he wasn't his dad's firstborn, so when his borther showed up I was immediately on board for that.
