Isn't the cross on the hot crossed buns some sort of thick gooey white frosting...?

Just sayin'.

Wikipedia says the crosses are made out of a simple flour and water paste. Going on hot cross buns I have eaten, it tastes like it could be (obviously not gooey once it's cooked).

Well all the ones I tend to have are store-bought, so I'd imagine stores resorted to an idea that is easy to do and lasts well. Maybe more specialty hot cross buns have frosting instead.

my mom never got around to frosting the hot cross buns when she made them. putting the cross striaght on the bun would be faster.
