I've just barely started reading Game of Thrones, mostly because the characters on the TV show are so interesting to me, and so is some of the world building, that I wanted a little bit more depth than actors' emoting and the audience attempting to interpret the emoting. So I don't know a lot about the writer or what. But as I thought and read, GRRM based a lot of this 'other' verse on this one - like the Red Wedding being based on something called The Black Dinner that happened in Scotland ages ago. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if the eating dog fetus thing was a thing based on an even more horrible thing.

And yeah, his extreme realism bugs me too, but what the fuck, they're his books, he can be as extreme as he likes. Don't like white savior Dany being pushed to the edge by guys being mean to puppies? Whya watchin'??
