Cost. Not being ugly. Having a decent camera is a plus, but not a must. And again, cost. The reason I don't yet have a smart phone - not willing to pay for data I will never use (I have wifi on campus and at home). Haven't figured out if I can get one without a data plan. I'm cycling out of my parents' plan...next year, I think? so I'll look into it more.

But I'm not willing to drop several hundred dollars annually for features that I won't use, is basically what I'm saying. I have a laptop. There are many, many things I'd rather spend that money on, if I have it.

Depending on service, you can (or you could a few months ago) get like 500 MB of data for 35$ on top of the 40$ monthly smartphone fee on Verizon.

Yep. Sadly, that's the cheap end of the spectrum for just a single person.

Just dropping a note here since I'm sort of in the same boat - wouldn't mind a smart phone but no way am I paying that much for the data plan. Verizon has a $35/month plan that has a limited amount of data, though unlimited text/talk, and some reasonable priced smartphones (nothing fancy, but ranging from $50-$80). I'm probably going to be getting it soon once I decide just which one of the phones I want.

So there are options out there that aren't as insanely priced if you don't plan on using much data!

That's still way more than I'm willing to pay right now. xD;

I don't mind paying that upfront cost so much, but those monthly costs are very high for me right now. My income is extremely limited and if I had that much spending money per month there are so many other things I'd rather spend it on.

You sound like me. I just posted below about getting a Tracfone and being quite pleased with it. (It has an all-in-one plan that can be used for either phone, text, or data, in any combination, so you can just use it for whatever you need it for and ignore the other stuff.)

Don't have a smart phone either. Not planning to either unless I really can't avoid it anymore.

Ugh, I'm sorry. I wouldn't get one if I had to buy a data plan either. I only use it on wi-fi.
