Phones

What was your criteria for picking your current phone? Cost? Features? Camera MP?

Re: Phones

Cost. Not being ugly. Having a decent camera is a plus, but not a must. And again, cost. The reason I don't yet have a smart phone - not willing to pay for data I will never use (I have wifi on campus and at home). Haven't figured out if I can get one without a data plan. I'm cycling out of my parents' plan...next year, I think? so I'll look into it more.

But I'm not willing to drop several hundred dollars annually for features that I won't use, is basically what I'm saying. I have a laptop. There are many, many things I'd rather spend that money on, if I have it.

I finally joined the iPhone bandwagon when Sprint offered service along with an unlimited data plan. So it's a iPhone 4S and it's over 2 years old now. I don't use it to the extent of say my brother, games, e-mails, work and social life. But I've found that the ability to check something online and keep my calendar synched up (especially one that is shared among family for mom's doctor appointments) just makes it much more helpful than if I didn't have an iPhone. I don't really use it for games, that's what the iPad is for! I've never used Androids so I can't comment on them. I'm sure if I did, I could replace this whole post with that phone brand.

It's an iPhone 4. That's literally my entire criteria. It has a good touch screen, doesn't lag (in my experience, mine is quite a few years old now), doesn't break easily, it isn't a huge hassle to go online, and I can keep reading material in it. I don't even dare venture into the waters of whatever the iPhone 5 is, I'm perfectly happy with my iPhone 4.

Well, I wanted a new release. I tend to use phones for years and I've never had a "new" phone before.

It had to take photos, email, facebook, maps, compass. Didn't pay much attention to camera MP though.

It didn't need fingerprinting crap.

It had to be kind of sturdy - no flip phones or too thin/small phones.

It had to be on sale or price matched.

I had to be able to buy it outright - no plans for me thank you.

It had to do backups when it connects to wireless - my previous phone (original iphone, a 2ndhand gift) only did USB cord backups and I was kinda pissed at the data I lost. There were dolphin photos...

So I got an iphone 5c.

Siri has been an entertaining bonus. No complaints yet.

Cost of plan. Basically my old Virgin mobile number got reassigned due to me not using it for awhile, and they didn't offer pay-as-you-go plans of the variety I used to use - $20 every 90 days, and I never even used that many minutes because I hate phones. Buuuut, I need one for when I'm going to be out of town and stuff, so I tried to find something that wasn't $10 a month or more.

Wound up with Tracfone, and got the phone itself for $5, paid for 120 minutes. That was a month ago, still have over half of them despite using the phone far more than I used my old phone, because this one actually does internet halfway decently (which came in really handy when I was in my accident in the middle of the night and didn't have anyone's number in the new phone yet; I just posted on Facebook asking if anyone local was still up who could give me a ride home) and I've been stuck in weird places without transportation a lot lately.

Never had a problem with service, either. This is pretty surprising, because I always got the impression Tracfone was about as "ghetto" as mobile phones came.

It has a big screen so I can type even with my big fingers. |D

Also, it's not an iPhone, so I don't have to worry about the screen shattering if I drop it by accident (I mean, depending, but seriously, I had an iPhone, and I dropped it two feet and the screen disintegrated, I've dropped my new phone, and no worries).

I pick up my new phone tomorrow and my criteria was that it was a smartphone that isn't an iphone. I hate how apple updates ruin things like the speaker and microphone and calendar and basically all of the basic functions of a smartphone. So all I cared about was not having to put up with that anymore.

android, not too expensive, not oversized

i have an htc one v, it's good. cheaper htc android, good size, easy to use. pretty good for my first smart phone. i only use wifi so i'm not spending too much

Re: Phones

(Anonymous) 2014-03-21 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Not so big I couldn't fit it in my hand (so no Samsung Galaxy), not so small I'm squinting at the screen to read stuff, no iPhones because I hate the way Apple does things, comes with a reasonable data plan, good size memory and/or microsd slot so I can have a bunch of music and movies on it for my long daily commutes.

I went with a SKY Vega racer.

My current phone was a gift as being my first cell so it's a cheap basic with 1.3 mp camera really as the only feature.
The biggest thing for me is that is has a full qwerty keyboard that makes texting (one of the only things I do) easy. I wish I could keep the keyboard for my future phones but basic phones that aren't crap are hard to come by it seems.

Which service plans were allowed/suitable for it. Over the life of the phone, you spend much more on monthly bills than the initial cost.

Re: Phones

(Anonymous) 2014-03-21 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Cost and usable internet connection time and features. I went on a year to study abroad. In my room I didn't get internet for over half the time I was there and my long-suffering laptop had at this point (probably also because of being lugged around plains and busses and what not to get around) pretty much started it's destruction countdown, so I was really reluctant to take him into university (not to mention, that thing was way to heavy for little old me). At this point having an internet connection on my phone really was a life-saver.

just got a new phone like last week actually. my only criteria were that it looks nice and had front facing camera lol. and i love it so i'm happy. also cost of course, but i got the new every 2 deal with verizon so that isn't such a big deal.

my only complaint would be that i picked the Moto X originally because you could customize it!! i was going to get a turquoise back and orange buttons. but for some reason it wouldn't work, and i instead picked an all white one that the verizon site sold itself. oh well. i'm content anyway.

I upgraded my phone this week and my criteria when I was looking was ease of use, the camera a bit I suppose(I like taking picture of my pets), social networking apps, and the price of the phone plan. Ended up picking the iphone 4s in the end because I liked it the best out of the ones I tried.

That it was white. XD I'm shallow, I just wanted it to be pretty. I only tend to get a new phone when the old one bites the dust every six+ years.

(Have a Samsung Galaxy 2, by the way.)

Uh. I didn't actually pick mine. I had a very old Nokia (ten years), and only wanted a phone that was super-simple and cheap. So my SO picked my new one when my poor Nokia died the death. It's a...Samsung Galaxy S3, and i got *freeeeeee* because it was a refurbished one.

I like it, even though the touch-screen thing still kinda weirds me out and/or annoys me. It's got a very good camera and i can yim on it, so - i'm happy. :)

Re: Phones

Idk, my current phone is old and it was a hand-me-down from my dad. It's slowly dying so I'm actually trying to choose a new one. I like my current brand so I'm probably choosing a sony phone with a nice enough camera and that it's not too expensive.

I'm a bit surprised you guys need to take plans into account. Here you buy the phone you want and it's completely independent of the phone company you're using.

Partly cost, but also battery life. I don't use my phone enough to warrant a smart phone, so when I had to replace my phone just recently, I opted for the chrapest LG phone Verizon had (which was not quite the cheapest phone they had). I chose LG because my last phone was an LG phone that made it nearly 4 years before an unfortunate encounter with some water and right up until the end, I only had to charge it about once a week, maybe twice if I was using it a lot or traveling through areas with a poor signal. Here's hoping the battery on my new one is that awesome!

I've recently bought an Android phone (lenovo 820) but still use my old Bada phone. It's not even a physical keyboard on my old Bada phone that I can't part with, it's that I'm stupid and can't figure out Android. Arghhh.

Re: Phones

(Anonymous) 2014-03-21 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
My parents picked it because they were buying it and they needed it to be from a specific store. I just needed a good camera and 3.5mm headphone jack so it was fine for me, if a little expensive.

No buttons I couldn't lock or otherwise cover up, small enough to fit in my pocket and use with my injured (dominant) hand, not a bunch of pre-installed, un-installable nonsense. Also has to be able to withstand a fall, or several -- it's the whole reason I had to break down and get a new phone in the first place, so it was kinda important.

And not iPhone (see: dropping).
