Probably never. A lot of charities do this: take in donations without people realizing that only a percentage of the money they donate goes to the actual cause and a lot of it goes to "administrative costs". I don't know that it's technically illegal even if it's really douchey.

And this is why I never, ever donate to anything.

Meh, just do some research first.

I donate to the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation not only because I believe in the cause, but also because it just so happens that 80% of donations get funneled into research. I can dig that.

That's a shame. It's not like ALL charities do this, after all. People should just do their homework before they donate and make sure they're okay with how the charity spends their intake. If in doubt, go local. Homeless shelters, women's shelters, food banks, suicide hotlines... donating time is helpful, not just money, and a charity is far less able to misuse your time.

Exactly. There are plenty of well-established charities that do not misuse the funds. You just have to do some research and automatically avoid the more suspicious ones that pop up on Facebook after every disaster.

no, that's why you research your charities before you pick one to donate to

no, that's your self-justification for never donating to anything. don't be lazy. do something good. i'm going to assume you don't donate time to activist organisations or charities either.

That's why I trust ADRA. Not just because it's Adventist (though I admit that has an influence), but because really does try to avoid doing that.
