I've no idea why they're being compared, they're not the same genres or target audience??

You'd be surprised! SnK has a pretty big periphery demographic of younger female fans, which happens a lot with shounen titles and Free! pretty much targeted younger females exclusively.

Also they're two of three anime tumblr actually cared about in 2013 (the other being the Dangan Ronpa adaption.) So comparisions were bound to be made.

Ah, I see. I hadn't realised they aired at the same time, so it's kind of like superwholock overlap?

<- obviously participates in none of those.

I'd say a lot of people are fans of both (and hey, they balance each other out pretty well) and there are definitely some crossovers, but usually only in funny posts (like Haru swimming in the stomach of a titan and stuff like that), but otherwise art and fanfic are pretty seperate. The fandom hasn't morphed the shows together into one big blob like SuperWhoLock has imo.

(like Haru swimming in the stomach of a titan and stuff like that)

I'm literally about to go out and thought I'd just check FS to see if anyone has replied to me and now I will be leaving the house with this image burned into my brain.

Thank you anon.

yeah, but they're two recent, popular shows that aired more or less at the same time and have managed to spawn very active, fic-oriented fandoms, both of them very ship-heavy, so i sort of get where the OP is coming from. and i see a lot of people who are active in both fandoms, so the audience overlap might be pretty significant, even though they're totally different genres.
