[free!, attack on titan]

(Anonymous) 2014-03-20 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
It makes sense. I bet a lot of people watching Free do it just to be able to read/write fics and fap to fanarts and doujins.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-20 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
What kind of logic is this? The OP is not complaining about SNK having LESS fics than Free! (which isn't even true, there is actually MORE on both ff.et and Archive Of Our Own), but that the fic is BETTER (which is probably due the less complicated setting).
(It's the same for fanarts and doujis)

(Anonymous) 2014-03-20 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I love, love, love how Free! and Attack on Titan are associated together. People always compare them. it's hilarious and awesome.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-20 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
IDK, a grimdark series with grimdark characters is bound to attract dark and edgy wannabes, who can't write for crap. At least Free! doesn't take itself that seriously and there's more space to play around with the plot because it's not as convoluted as AoT.

Though I found the Free! fanfic pretty meh, so i dunno what I'm defending here anyway.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-21 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
Lmao, I just came here to say this. SnK looks like a Naruto-tier show with a Naruto-tier fanbase that just hasn't realized it yet.

I've no idea why they're being compared, they're not the same genres or target audience??

(Anonymous) 2014-03-20 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
You'd be surprised! SnK has a pretty big periphery demographic of younger female fans, which happens a lot with shounen titles and Free! pretty much targeted younger females exclusively.

Also they're two of three anime tumblr actually cared about in 2013 (the other being the Dangan Ronpa adaption.) So comparisions were bound to be made.

yeah, but they're two recent, popular shows that aired more or less at the same time and have managed to spawn very active, fic-oriented fandoms, both of them very ship-heavy, so i sort of get where the OP is coming from. and i see a lot of people who are active in both fandoms, so the audience overlap might be pretty significant, even though they're totally different genres.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-20 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Well with Free! the characters and their relationships are pretty well fleshed out and the world is familiar, fic writers can focus on creating plots and crafting tone. With SnK we don't actually know the plot because everything is a mystery, the world is unfamiliar and most of the characters only have characterization of the grimdark/angsty sort. So fic writers would need to put a lot more into a fic - and risk it being jossed.

For most people I imagine with Free! they have room to knuckle down and dig into something but With SnK they're kinda floundering on a lot of things so it's easier to slip into super tropey things or just not bother putting in the effort.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-20 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, in OPs or other people's cases, it may just be that the fic from AoT simply doesn't align with their pet theories or character interpretations. There's a ton of stuff that's still in the air, so with this sort of series either you go for a common trope, or you end up in an argument about what's valid or not according to canon.

Well, I'm over in KnB and jealous of both so...

(Anonymous) 2014-03-21 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Why though? The fandoms are shit. SnK is the most disgusting fandom ever with the worst taste in ships and headcanons.

Nothing to be jealous of :/

Don't be jealous because they are popular. Quality over quantity is waaaay more important.

Doesn't really surprise me that much, actually, because I think Free is probably easier to write for, especially for the sort of shipping fic that a lot of people like to write. The characters and their relationships with each other are pretty well established and it's got a fairly small and manageable core cast. The main pairings are pretty firmly rooted in canon and even the less popular pairings usually have at least some small canon support to cling to. It's a series that you can easily write a quick fun slash fic for without much trouble. It's a character driven story, so it lends itself well to the type of character driven fic that's usually pretty popular.

By contrast, Attack on Titan has a lot more plot stuff going on plus a ton of characters (who as a whole are probably more difficult to deal with than Free's cast, writing-wise) and a more complicated world. It's a lot harder to write for a series where the cast are facing life-threatening danger constantly than one where everyone just hangs out and goes swimming all the time. Plus there's a difference in what you go in expecting: if I'm looking for Free fic, I'm looking for slashy relationship fics, maybe fluffy and cute or teenage drama. Titan, I'd rather read something rich and plotty, and people just don't write those as much in general, so you get a bunch of teenage drama AUs that are terribly disappointing in general. (Also not helping is that AoT's most popular character is not as easily slashable as Free's, so you end up with Levi/Eren as the big pairing when there's not a lot of canon for them and half the people writing don't even seem to have much of a grip on either character.)

(Anonymous) 2014-03-21 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. I'm in both fandoms and I fully agree.

Both fandoms have their fair share of stupid shit, but overall Free! fanworks have better quality. Then again SnK is not much competition, but still.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-21 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
I was disappointed searching for fanfics and 99% of it was for SnK is Levi/Eren. Most of it is OOC with Eren as uke-trope who is all meek and fanboys over Levi. So, no thanks.

Despite there being so many characters in SnK and a more complex plot than Free! there is not much variety when it comes to SnK fandom unfortunately. *bitter laugh*

At least with Free! people are truer to the characters and their relationships, and I've seen more variety.

Yeah, I'm still a little bit surprised that ship ended up as the front runner. I figured it would have a fair amount of shippers but I initially pegged Eren/Jean as becoming the juggernaut (fandom loves rivalmance after all). I still don't know what happened. Maybe a lot of Jean fans were too caught up in Jean/Marco, idk.

I was actually really surprised by how much I genuinely enjoyed Free!. I thought it was a fun, cute show that doesn't take itself too seriously and pokes a bit of fun at other sports anime (there are a lot of sports anime where it's considered natural for the character's to be completely obsessed with their sport and treat competitions as life or death. In Free, Rin's ultra competitiveness is shown to be a pretty severe character flaw that caused him to fuck up most of his personal relationships. And other people in the show find Haru's obsession with water to be a bit over the top, even if they do humor him. It's a fun show nonny!)

Damn, I don't even like Free, but I know I'm not the demographic it's aiming for and I appreciate that it knew what its audience wanted and served it on a golden platter.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-21 07:07 am (UTC)(link)
idk about Free, but I hoped to see tons of epic highschool AUs with Berthold/Reiner and Imir/Christa, but all I see is Levi, and I couldn't care less about him. neither do I understand where Jean/Marco comes from. such a waste.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-21 01:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Free! is moeshit for girls, so it's going to have better fic anyway because even a drunk pelican can write it.

SnK actually requires the viewer to turn their brain on to understand and write decent fic for, and your run-of-the-mill fans just aren't going to put in that kind of effort.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-22 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
But it's an anime fandom. It's guaranteed to be shitty no matter what.
