Yeah, that was my experience as well. I went in expecting absolutely nothing, I just wanted something light and uncomplicated for a change, and I was genuinely surprised by how much I enjoyed it. You're right that the show doesn't take itself seriously, which I appreciate, because it doesn't try to pretend that it's something it's not, and the characters are actually compelling beyond the usual anime stereotypes.

The secret might be a bit misleading and give the impression that I don't actually like Free!, which isn't true at all. It's just that Free! is a cute sports anime that could be the epitome of the fandom darling high school AU (which, while totally fine, isn't that interesting in terms of setting), and SnK has so much fascinating worldbuilding going on (on top of characters who might not be very fleshed out but have lots of potential nonetheless) that the possibilities for interesting fic seemed endless to me and I expected amazing fic. I mean, it's a grim, postapocalyptic past/future! There's a war going on! The enemy is terrifying and nigh invincible! We struggle not to give in to despair! Love in the time of war, when we know we could die at any time! Frantic, desperate people running out of time! So much potential for angst, which fandom loves! And then I actually started reading. Suffice to say, that was not the case.

Damn, when you put it like that it makes me even more depressed how shitty SnK fandom turned out :(

So much potential... wasted.

And I agree with you about Free! it knows exactly what it's doing and it did what it set out to do. The moment Haru and Rin dramatically threw off their shirts to reveal they always wear their swimsuit underneath, I knew this show wasn't taking itself too seriously. It did have some genuinely touching moments but at it's heart it was a lighthearted story of friendship and swimming.

Lol, yes, and long-suffering Makoto trying to keep Haru from getting charged with indecent exposure <3

It might be silly, it might be slash-bait, but at least it's self-aware and tongue-in-cheek (though it does have its touching moments as well as moments of surprising depth, I agree), and this is something that I can always appreciate.

But yes, the SnK fandom. I shall forever mourn what might have been :( (Or I could just start writing, though real life is doing its best to make sure I don't have too much time on my hands.)

Which is weird because I went into Free! also expecting nothing and wanting something cute and feels-y. After the first episode, I wanted to murder the entire cast with a pool noodle. I gave it two more episodes and ended up hating every. single. character.

But it's really not a surprise that something cute and uncomplicated will have better fic, because it doesn't take much in the way of skill or effort to write it.

Well, I'm genuinely sorry you didn't like it. It always sucks when you think something might be fun and it turns out it isn't. :(

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA are you fucking serious? They're all the textbook sports anime stereotypes, just add a little queerbait here and there. Worse than Prince of Tennis, and I didn't think anything could top that in terms of "so stereotypical it's almost unintentional parody."
