Well with Free! the characters and their relationships are pretty well fleshed out and the world is familiar, fic writers can focus on creating plots and crafting tone. With SnK we don't actually know the plot because everything is a mystery, the world is unfamiliar and most of the characters only have characterization of the grimdark/angsty sort. So fic writers would need to put a lot more into a fic - and risk it being jossed.

For most people I imagine with Free! they have room to knuckle down and dig into something but With SnK they're kinda floundering on a lot of things so it's easier to slip into super tropey things or just not bother putting in the effort.

Yeah, in OPs or other people's cases, it may just be that the fic from AoT simply doesn't align with their pet theories or character interpretations. There's a ton of stuff that's still in the air, so with this sort of series either you go for a common trope, or you end up in an argument about what's valid or not according to canon.

Hi, OP here :)

The thing is, for me, it's not even about character interpretation or pet theories (though it's nice when the characters aren't wildly OOC for a change), but about the fact that so much of the fic in this fandom is just so abysmally written. Even some things that I see recced all over the place. I'm not saying Free! has no badfic, but it's just that I'm much more likely to find something that won't make me cringe after two paragraphs. At least on the purely technical, stylistic level.

IA, the writing for SnK fic is pretty terrible and reads like teenagers writing. I guess it's the demographic. I'm so disappointed since the canon has lots of potential.
