A couple that have stood out to me as the saddest lyrics I have ever heard:

"Your life and my life, they don't touch at all" - Sonic Youth, "Wish Fulfillment"
"And even though you needed me, it was clear that I couldn't do a thing for you" - Pink Floyd, "A Great Day for Freedom"

And really, I can just read through archives of Pink Floyd, Suzanne Vega, Vienna Teng, or Richard Shindell lyrics like they were poetry. Such amazing lyrics...

They Might Be Giants frequently makes me stop and do a double-take at the lyrics too, but for different reasons. :D
