Re: Men Vs Women: tl; dr serious response

Ok, let's assume this is a serious question! I know in my college sociology-elective days I did think things like this sometimes, without being a troll, so who knows?

For what it's worth, I have known feminists of all kinds, including some with very fringe beliefs. I have never met anyone who thought currently living men owed them anything in recompense for Paleolithic rapists (or even the past few decades' worth of rape and abuse).

I don't know that making amends for "the last few millions of years" makes all that much sense. History's not a monolith even within cultures, and we can assume that pre-history isn't either (if modern chimps have cultural differences, our Australopithecus and archaic human ancestors probably did, too). But even if it were, rape and abuse aren't original sins transmitted on the Y chromosome. They're not something you can do penance for and eventually erase or outweigh. It's not just that history and prehistory are too big -- it's that the project doesn't make sense in the first place. Even if 100% of all male ancestors prior to 1990 were rapists (not a real statistic!), the best we could do now is try to be better. That's just how time works.

Men (and women) who have committed rape and abuse can try to make amends to the particular people they've hurt. If that's you, be careful not to be pushy about it -- don't demand forgiveness or talk about wanting to harm yourself. Just let them know you're sorry and leave it to them to decide the next step.

It's probably better to focus on what you can do now to make the world that you live in safer and happier for people of all genders. You can support organizations that advocate for the victims of sexual violence, you can work for better laws and speak out against casual (or not so casual) sexism, you can let your friends know that this is an important issue for you.

You can't put the past right, because it's the past. But you can do good things in the present and try to make a better world for the people around you.
