I think you're reading into it. Some people really aren't equipped to deal with suicide threats and constant belittling of self worth and lots of social awkwardness. Saying so is not putting people with mental illness down, it's recognizing a major disconnect with people who do those things. Given how common those things are in fandom, it's understandable that someone who can't handle them feels alone in fandom.

You might be reading too much into it. I'm not comfortable with the suicide threats or constant self-esteem issues either, and I miss those days when fandom was just fandom, instead of the safe space for the mentally ill fandom now increasingly seems to be. That doesn't mean that I'd be putting down those who are suffering from a mental illness.

Seriously, we get secrets along these lines at least once every couple of months or so. Assuming it's not just the same person submitting every time, these guys ought to stop agonizing over being the only sane person in fandom and just get together and start a club or something already.

I have a mental illness and I really hate the way so many people in fandom try to pull the mental illness card as an excuse for acting like a douchebag or being overly sensitive. Mental illness is not an excuse for bad behavior, end of story.
