Tell my friend who was repeatedly raped by her father as a teenager that he wasn't a pedo. I guess he just liked young women, huh? Seriously, it's pretty dodgy to put too fine a point on the difference, because the characteristics of abuse are all the same.

Also, he preyed on her brother. I'm not sure what age. And her half-brother. I find myself not at all concerned to ask whether their balls had dropped first.

I see the ~technical difference, but what I mean by "too fine a point" is that children are hampered in their ability to consent freely to something they will enjoy without repercussions, and are in a position of vulnerability.

I understand there are some prepubescents who are fully capable of enjoying a sexual relationship without trauma as they get older, and many more just-pubescents. Some could even be with adults. Do I think that should be legal? No. The law has to be a blunt instrument.

Putting emphasis on puberty or not takes away the emphasis that the crime of adults fucking children is more about POWER than SEX. (Which many persist in not seeing, hence problem.) So I am nervous about making that distinction in a moral sense.

In terms of accurately describing a fandom kink fantasy, sure, be as precise as you want. But don't say it's about a moral fucking difference.

Your friend's dad was an abusive creepazoid who is hopefully rotting in jail or dead or roasting slowly on a spit in hell. But unless he also was attracted to and/or sexually abused pre-pubescent children, he was not a pedophile. Pedophile doesn't mean "disgusting abhorrent shithead who deserves to be boiled in oil for eternity." It means "person who is sexually attracted to pre-pubescent children."

My grandfather sexually abused all his kids after they hit puberty, and even though my parents were careful never to leave me alone with him, I will never stop being grateful that he died when I was seven. He had no sexual interest in babies or young children. He was an ephebophile, not a pedophile, but he was still a disgusting abhorrent shithead.

I'm sorry for your friend and I hope she got the help and support she needed and doesn't have to deal with her father anymore.

"Pedophilia" is neither a fandom kink (well, it is, but not its basic definition) or an abuse descriptor. Arguably the most accurate category for it would be "mental illness". It refers to what's going on in the brain that causes people to want to take any of those actions. If it's with kids, it's pedophilia. Your rage makes it sound like we should just use "pedophilia" to refer to any situation of taking advantage of someone relatively helpless. Should we apply it to animals too? That also has a word. Pedophilia, ephebophilia, and bestiality are all really fucking gross horrible things to do/act on, but that doesn't mean one should be conflated with the other just because you're mad.

AYRT. Okay, I didn't want to go there, because it almost invariably devolves into insta-wank, but pedophilia is sexual attraction to pre-pubescent children. A pedophile is not necessarily going to be an abuser--to be an abuser, they'd have to act on their attraction somehow. An ephebophile isn't necessarily going to be an abuser either, just someone attracted to children who are underage, but are post-pubescent. I think both groups have issues and if they act on their attractions they are disgusting scum, but just being attracted to someone underage doesn't make them an abuser. Creepy and in need of help, but that's all. Ephebophilia is not a fandom specific term, and calling someone a pedophile isn't the same as calling them an abuser.

Ephebophilia in fanfic is something else again--I read a lot of teen girl/older guy stuff while I was in my teens, and believe me, I wasn't imagining myself as the older guy. I had the opposite problem--as a young teen and still now, I'm attracted to older guys, and I am so lucky I was never taken advantage of by a creeper.

Age =/= Maturity, but there's a reason we collectively have to pretend it does.

One other aspect of abuse is that many abusers aren't really attracted to children or teens at all - they commit the abuse because of the power dynamic or other similar factors, but attraction has little to do with it. (Not all, and I don't recall any conclusive studies on this, but I do remember needing to research child sexual abuse a while back and the fact that it's not, or at least may not be, always based on attraction came up quite a bit.)

To the OP whose friend was raped: I am so sorry she had to go through that. It is a fucking terrible thing to experience and I hope that it is all in the past for her. BUT - that doesn't change the fact pedophilia and ephebophilia are separate things, and that attraction to young children =/= attraction to young teens - if attraction was a part of the motivation for her father abusing her in the first place (it may very well have not been - but he's still sick for what he did, either way).

The terminology is largely what people are debating here. Picking someone's pocket and hacking their accounts are both ways to steal someone's money and identity, but that doesn't mean we conflate the two and call them the same, no matter how similar they actually are - and no matter how much the thieves would still deserve to face the consequences of their actions.

People here are saying that being attracted to a 14-year-old is a different issue from being attracted to a 4-year-old, with very different complications and social backgrounds attached to them. They aren't saying that someone is less of a rapist if they have sex with a 14-year-old instead of a 4-year-old.
