You know, when this season was airing I actually saw a lot of positive responses to Mary. And lots of interest in Mary/John/Sherlock. I thought that was pretty cool (even though I'm not usually into OT3's, and don't really ship this particular one) because I thought Mary was a great character, but I guess that positive reception of Mary didn't stick around. That's unfortunate.

As a Sherlock fan, I think part of the Mary hate is just backlash because she was portrayed as so awesome in the first two episodes and then just-- wow. In the first two, she was exactly the type of character that everybody could like, no matter what they shipped. She supported John and Sherlock and encouraged them to spend time together so she didn't bother the Johnlock shippers, and even was close enough to Sherlock that she DID create strong support for an OT3, and she was funny/interesting enough to keep those who were just watching for the cases and shenanigans and not shipping at all happy. It was win-win.

That being said, the third episode was either poorly written, or there's a lot that is going to come out in S4. Personally, I'm hoping it's the latter. I think a lot of people are hoping for that, hence the Mary-hate. It makes no logical sense that Mary had to "perform surgery"-- couldn't she have shot him in the leg? Knocked him out? Just let him be,explain the situation and get his help? Any of those options was better than what she actually did (combined with the subsequent threats if Sherlock revealed her secret to John). If the writers wanted to make the viewers sympathetic to Mary's plight, they could have come up with many, MANY other scenarios. She did not have to be a for-hire assassin; she did not have to shoot Sherlock.

It isn't like the Mary we saw in the first two episodes was the same person with one dark secret-- she was being blackmailed for a past indiscretion/love affair/money mistake, etc. The writers made her a complete lie, and I think the audience is hoping that there was a reason for that, instead of accepting that the writers tried to create a Sherlock- counterpart that was dark and compelling and still very likable and *failed.* Because by the end of the third episode, I don't find her likable at all, and I think a lot of others felt the same. If that was the writers intent, then S4 is going to be a mess.

Long story short, a lot of fans live in the hope that Mary is, in fact, a villain, that Sherlock knows this and will take her down when it is time, and that none of the incongruity is, in fact, just a result of bad, uneven writing.

I see what you're saying. People don't have to like her and there are definite reasons to not, but I've seen fandom ADORE characters despite those things (maybe even because of them) so I suppose that's what's throwing me off. I'm aware Sherlock doesn't necessarily have the same audience, but it does confound me at times what makes one morally questionable character popular and another hated. (JSYK, I found Mary extremely lovable in the first two episodes and was very confused about her entire role in the third episode, though not entirely surprised. I still think she's done some terrible things but overall have settled in thinking that even if she isn't the best person, she's an interesting character. IDK where the show is going to go with her but I'm looking forward to finding out.)
