Re: shows & movies: animation or live-action?
By the same token, I also prefer more 'dramatic' movies animated, because they allowed for an emphasis on character interactions more without taking away as much from surrounding stories and contexts (i.e. Spirited Away managed to focus very well on Chihiro's introspection even as they gave great body to the spirit world she was in - if this we live-action, either it would be highly introspective without the well-bodied spirit world, or it would be a strong fantasy but without that great character-centric element driven by her personal struggle).
Action movies, though, I want live-action - it's just more fun seeing all that detail, which is kind of what I'm there for, anyway. Genre-centered movies (i.e. movies where the setting and story are more important than the characters) I also tend to prefer in live-action.
None of this is absolute by any means - i.e. I love the early Harry Potter movies despite every reason for them to seem like they would have been better animated, and I can't imagine them any other way.
