I was with this secret for the first part, but then it totally ran off the rails. Wow.

I'm sure this will come as a shock to you, but MOST people are not equipped to handle suicide threats, constant belittling of self-worth, and/or excessive social awkwardness. I've found those behaviors tend to be pretty rare, and I find it hard to believe that a really significant number of fandom people behave that way. If it's really that bad where you are, drop everything and find a better corner of fandom, OP.

And I really, REALLY dislike how you basically conflated all mental illnessess (and the willingness to talk about them) with not just awkward OTT fanning, but fucking suicide threats. That is some offensive shit right there, OP. Fuck off with this "I don't know what to do because I'm actually a SANE and REASONABLE person, unlike all you MENTALLY ILL WEIRDOS" bullshit.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-22 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, fandom is for comparing mental illnesses and it's a designated safe space for suicidal people, especially teenagers who don't want to do their homework because: tumblr. Why the fuck do people keep expecting fandom to be about fandom stuff?

Do you seriously not see this much? Because I haven't been in a fandom in 5 years where mental illness isn't paraded about like it's some sort of achievement. And suicide threats are VERY common on tumblr. I will never not take a suicide threat seriously. It's just the way I am, and I think most people are the same way. That's what makes hollow suicide threats so effective. And it's draining. Holy fuck is it draining, especially because so many of them really are hollow. They're people who didn't get followed back by someone they admire or they don't want to do their homework or they're seeking validation because they didn't get the expected number of notes on a post within a few minutes of posting. Why is it so hard to understand that some of us aren't happy that fandom has turned into "My mental illness is better than yours!" where better means worse? Is it really unthinkable that there are people who don't want to see constant whining and SUICIDE THREATS? Hell, most of the people I know who hate this behavior have mental illnesses themselves! Fandom can be a great escape for people who have mental illnesses. That doesn't mean it should be ABOUT mental illnesses.

on tumblr

I think I found your problem. Like I said, if it really is that bad, pack up and move elsewhere. You don't have to put up with a place where suicide threats are common. Because suicide threats are emotional abuse, and you do not deserve that.

I notice you're not addressing my point that conflating all mental illness with abusive shit like suicide threats is offensive. Good job with the sound and fury though.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-22 01:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Because it's a stupid point and misses that of the secret, probably.

I don't care whether OP meant for it to be the point of the secret (and for what it's worth I'm sure ze didn't intend for it to be), that doesn't mean it isn't in there or that it's not offensively wrong.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-22 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
I think your problem is Tumblr. I was a teen when LJ was the peak of fandom and never ran across all this mental illness bullshit.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-22 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
That's not even what the secret was saying. The only fucking thing OP seemed to be expressing was multiple ways of having a tough time connecting with major aspects of fandom. OP never once said hey, you guys are doing it totally wrong, stop damn it. It was just a fucking lament at wishing that what OP prefers was easier to find and you know it.

Or maybe you don't. I guess I just found THAT hard to believe-- until I considered how utterly out of touch you must be with the behaviors that many fandom spaces are becoming NOTORIOUS for. Newsflash: people in fandom behave that way, and it's getting harder and harder to deal with for a lot of others who are really uncomfortable with it for a number of reasons. Not LEAST of which is that mental illness is not a merit badge or a free pass to shitty behavior but that's what many people wield it as, and fandom is NOT a safe space substitute for getting real help with real problems. Fandom is at worst a toxic environment in some areas, and at best full of MORONS who love to talk out their asses as if they know up from down but by and large know NOTHING about how to safely and effectively talk to and assist genuinely mentally ill people, and are likely to do WAY more harm than good.

Get off your high horse, take your head out of your ass, look around, and consider the possibility of your own naivety before jumping all over someone for the horrible sin of admitting having trouble with a troubling reality next time.

Shush, OP. If you don't want people getting mad at you then you shouldn't imply that all mentally ill people are abusive.

Also, get off of Tumblr. I have beeen in fandom for seven years and not once seen a suicide threat. There are better fandom spaces out there just waiting for you, and you deserve to be in them. Don't give me this angry tl;dr about how shitty behaviors are shitty as though I just don't understand. If they weren't shitty I wouldn't be mad that you implied huge numbers of people did them. There are many people with mental illnesses who would never think of doing something as nasty as a suicide threat, yet your wording implies that it's commonplace for all mentally ill people to do it. This is wrong.

Stop your ranting, actually read what I said, and consider the possibility that you phrased things really fucking badly instead of angrily word-barfing at the nearest offended person next time.

DA

Or, you could stop fucking telling people what to do. Novel idea, I'm sure.

If they are doing something I find this wrong, you better believe I am going to tell them to stop.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-22 02:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen a suicide threat even ON tumblr. Seriously, unless you have a policy of following back everyone who follows you, it's really not that hard to have a dash composed only of people who you actually want to read.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-22 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
On the other hand, that's why I don't follow some people whose fanworks (usually Homestuck fanart) I really like: three quarters of their posts are about their mental illness, or how horrible their jobs are, or how horrible their homework is. I don't want to see the majority of their posts, so I don't follow them. I do check their tags for that fandom sometimes, though.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-23 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
Not OP, you self-righteous, condescending twat. Did you miss the many other subthreads making it clear that despite YOUR blissfully ignorant fandom experience, there are actually numerous other people who sympathize with OP?

Again: I suggest taking your head out of your ass and not jumping to so many indefensible conclusions.

Oh no no, you definitely ping me as the OP. The way you tried to explain what the secret really meant, the logic-fail strawman of "stop saying OP told people they were doing it wrong!!," the angriness that I am apparently very "special" and "lucky" to have not experienced the horrors of people with mental illness being emotionally abusive shits all the time in every fandom space, and most especially, the way you still have not had one word to say about the real problem I had with this secret. You are conspicuously avoiding my point even now. Days later and you're still here yelling at me but don't have anything to say about the actual issue.

And resorting to ad-hominems to try to distract me, tut tut! If you somehow aren't the OP, you're just as hopeless.
