Re: "The ideas were good, but..."
I read a lot of "good idea" fic and deeply enjoy it. For example, I read a lot of HP fic that has excellent, excellent world-building or very interesting plotting or great character insight but that in some other way (mechanics, characterization, etc) falls short of my standard for the best writing. And you know what? These less than perfect fics are often the ones that emotionally resonate with me the most; they make me *feel* something, and wow is that an accomplishment.
