"The ideas were good, but..."

(Anonymous) 2014-03-21 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Well that's just a polite way to say it sucks, right?

I get pretty proud when people mention the good ideas regarding my writing, but today I heard somebody say that nobody cares much about "ideas"/concepts after they experienced it- that really, it's not the ideas that will stand out after a good excecution, only the bad ones.
I think I agree with that.
Nobody is going to point out that character behaviour x was a good idea, except for some meta fans. If it's good, they're still in the experience and say something like "character x was awesome! I liked how they kept a cool head etc etc"

Now I feel really embarrassed for internally gloating being praised for my "ideas". And pretty disheartened as well, woe me :(

But now you can get better. Good ideas are still a thing that is needed, now you understand a bit more into what else you need. Keep at it kid.

thanks. I guess it's a good way to humble myself, urrrgh

Good ideas are the basis for a good story. A story can be technically sound but if it's just a rehash of multiple cliches without an original twist it's still going to suck, right? If you work on your writing skills then you'll start getting reviews saying "good story" rather than "good idea."

No, it means exactly what it says: the ideas were good, and therefore if you did a lot of rewriting, the thing itself would be good because the foundational content is good even if it isn't expressed well or is all muddled up. Hard work on its own without any good ideas produces easy-to-consume mediocrity. Hard work combined with good ideas produces greatness.

Eh, I guess it was mostly a misconception on my side. People told me they loved the ideas about my texts, I got praised randomly for my "innovation". They didn't give me much criticism at all though (maybe due to group dynamics) so I thought everything was mostly fine with my stories.
If people are honest, then it means exactly what it says.

Most of the time, just talking about the idea/concept outside of the experience probably tells you something about their immersion if they're not professional critics.

I dunno, maybe I'm misunderstanding you, but I think ideas are the most important part of a story -- whether fanfiction or book. I don't give a damn if the writing is amazing if there's no actual good idea behind it.

I think it depends on the person and the creative work in question. There are episodes of my favorite show, for example, that were fairly terrible taken as a whole package, but still made some interesting additions to canon that I really like.

Afraid I disagree anon. Plenty of things have good ideas/backgrounds/premise that sound awesome but the execution is lacking. So with refining, practice, idea bouncing etc they can be improved on!

So it sounds like some of your ideas are good but they just need practice in the execution so the creation matches the level of good your ideas are?

Like I have so many art ideas and I'm sure some of them are good but the actual execution will fall short more often than not.

Then there's other people who will take a bad idea and make it really pretty - but the original idea is still bad so it's kind of a shallow piece of media that's nice to look at but the background idea is :/ so the overall opinion is so-so.

sooo tl;dr ideas/concepts are important, even if you need execution practice!

(I hope i properly understood what you were getting at there)

Not at all. If you disliked a book/movie, it's pretty easy to tell why--there are good ideas that are poorly executed, and dumb ideas that are done incredibly well. If you have good ideas, then you're halfway there, in my opinion. Your writing will get better as you practice, learn more techniques, address your strengths and weaknesses, and grow. Don't give up!

Sometimes it's true, though, that the ideas are good and the execution is not.

I call humbug. A good idea/plot will keep me reading just to find out what the heck is going to happen. Case in point, Gillian Flynn's books. I HATE THE WAY SHE WRITES. Bloated and she is horrible at giving different characters voices. (All the characters speak exactly the same. The same speech pattern. The same vocab. The same everything.) I swear, reading her prose is like listening the Kronk talk about Kusco's poison. The poison for Kusco. The poison made specifically for Kusco. The poison.

BUT!

Her plots always drive me to read her entire novels because, damn, the woman can write a plot.

Plot and ideas matter. The always matter.

Not necessarily.

I read a lot of "good idea" fic and deeply enjoy it. For example, I read a lot of HP fic that has excellent, excellent world-building or very interesting plotting or great character insight but that in some other way (mechanics, characterization, etc) falls short of my standard for the best writing. And you know what? These less than perfect fics are often the ones that emotionally resonate with me the most; they make me *feel* something, and wow is that an accomplishment.

I wouldn't say that people don't care about ideas, just that they're not solely what makes writing good or enjoyable. A good idea without decent writing to back it up might be a little weaker than say, a mediocre or clichéd idea that's written extremely well. But the catch about ideas not standing out unless the execution is bad is that, well, if you do your job well as a writer the story is going to work and read naturally-- so much so that hopefully people won't have the time or inclination to analyze it. At least not right away. The reason why it stands out after a bad execution is that everything stands out when something is poorly conceived and poorly written.

But honestly, don't be disheartened. Having good ideas is a good thing, no two ways about it. You don't know for sure that your writing is poor. If you want to know, find a good beta, someone who's more than a proofreader who can be honest about what you've written and then listen really carefully to what they say. Bad writing is fixable, OP. Bad ideas... well, they're a little harder to get rid of.

Good ideas are important. But NGL, "you have good ideas" is one of my go-to phrases when I'm trying to sandwich criticism between two slices of faint praise.

Re: "The ideas were good, but..."

(Anonymous) 2014-03-22 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to know someone who genuinely had really fun, creative ideas. Their spelling, grammar, and sentence structure, though, left a lot to be desired.

Writing mechanics can be fixed with a good beta/editor. But I believe that if your ideas suck, then you're dead in the water.

Also keep in mind, people have different tastes in writing. I like a cleaner style when I'm reading. Some love a florid style that would make the Victorians proud.

There's an audience out there for everyone, so I wouldn't discount your works just yet. Find a trusted second opinion, if you can, before you decide everything you write is crap. ;)
