Let me reiterate what I wrote above - where I live, ephebophilia (which, unlike hebephilia, concerns late teens) is made perfectly legal since the age of consent is 15. I don't find it inherently wrong, it depends on the particular case. Emotional maturity is a tricky thing, but a friend of mine from high school had a brief relationship with a 22 year-old when she was 16 and she doesn't seem to regret it or anything. And nobody stood there shaking their heads in prudish wrath.

Ephebophilia to me is understandable and somewhat acceptable.
Pedophilia, ie. sexual interest in prepubescent kids is a deviant sexual behavior which is disgusting and unacceptable to me. So there. There is a difference in those words and one is definitely much more excusable than the other.

I agree with this comment. Some of my high school classmates at 14-15 had boyfriends in their 20s as well. Nobody stood there shaking their heads in prudish wrath either, and it's not like the parents didn't know. They don't regret it either, too.

Also, judging from the comments above America doesn't know what a "middle ground" is.

Gee, thanks for painting us all with the same brush. Obviously, consent is a case by case basis, and the legal age varies in North America from 16-18. In my state, it's 16, and I'm bewildered by folks who insist It's Gotta Be 18, Or It's Gross And Creepy.

What most of the commenters are trying to say is simply that, the more disparate the age gap, the more questionable is the ability to consent. Obviously, a forty-something guy trying to get in a teen's pants is a perv, because there's an imbalance of power there. But a 14 year old dating someone just a few years older than them? Not a big deal.

Americans have a skewed idea of "power".

Are you being deliberately obtuse?

A lot of people also seem to be forgetting that it's a scientific fact that girls go through puberty earlier than boys do and therefore mature physically and mentally before them. I remember being a teenager and thinking that the boys in my grade were stupid and immature - because they were, compared to the girls. A 14/15-year-old girl is very likely on the same emotional and mental level as that 18-year-old boy because that's just how development works.
