The problem is that if someone has a legit problem, people on the internet are not qualified to deal with it and be their therapist. In fact, they might end up giving well-meaning advice that actually makes things worse BECAUSE they are not therapists. That is not the kind of burden that should be placed on people who are just there to enjoy fandom.

Not only that, but there are a lot of people online who will encourage and enable someone in their unhealthy habits and try to convince them that it's normal. Someone who is suffering from severe social anxiety does not need people to "poor bb" them and tell them it's okay not to leave the house for a month at a time, they need to get professional help. The internet often becomes an echo chamber of perpetuating unhealthy behavior, which helps no one.

if it's something that's a mental illness or issue the first thing I say usually is "go get help". and I see a lot of people responding the same way.

Doesn't mean it's not a good first step for someone to just hear that someone's out there and they care. It's not enabling to give someone an internet hug and tell them, from personal experience, that getting professional help isn't as scary as it sounds, and it's worth it.

Again, it might just come down to the space you're spending time in. :/
