Also, if nobody you follow on LJ or tumblr post that stuff, where are you seeing it? Except maybe here, where it's very easy to simply scroll by threads that don't interest you?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-22 01:46 am (UTC)(link)Why does it make you uncomfortable? It kinda makes it sound like you wish they'd stop just because of that, and...I do not think that's a good reason.
I don't think they should stop because it makes me uncomfortable, I think they should GET HELP. Posting on the internet about their diagnoses as if they're merit badges is not seeking help. Posting suicide threats in the fandom tags on tumblr is not seeking help. These are people who are tech-savvy so I don't believe that they don't know how to go to Google and type in "suicide hotline" and bring up a chat box or send a text or make a phone call to any of the thousands of places available for them, that they are limited to seeking help in fandom tags on tumblr.
And as for seeing it all the time? This is the one place it doesn't bother me because I've only seen it in GC, which is an acceptable place to start a conversation about just about any topic. And this is a community with a lot of the same people having discussions with each other, so it's easy for people to get to know each other and make a connection. From what I've seen of it happening here, the people that do it are specifically reaching out to the people of FS, not just throwing something out into the ether.
But posting about it in fandom tags on tumblr? Making a post in a fandom community on LJ? I don't understand why people do that, I only know that they do. And trust me: there is no good way to handle it when someone makes a post like that on a fandom comm on LJ.
My personal reasons for being uncomfortable with suicide threats posted all over fandom are my own. I don't wish people to kill themselves. But I do see a distinction between seeking help and posting suicide threats in fandom.

But aside from that, I don't disagree with the fact that seeking RL help is the best thing. But wanting to find someone to talk to, figure out what's going on...nothing wrong with that. I guess I haven't really experienced any single individual constantly trying to get attention/using the internet as their therapist. People talk about it once or twice to help work through it, realize they need help, and then they go get help.
But then, this is the fandom space I spend the most time on.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-23 01:46 am (UTC)(link)Not only that, but there are a lot of people online who will encourage and enable someone in their unhealthy habits and try to convince them that it's normal. Someone who is suffering from severe social anxiety does not need people to "poor bb" them and tell them it's okay not to leave the house for a month at a time, they need to get professional help. The internet often becomes an echo chamber of perpetuating unhealthy behavior, which helps no one.

Doesn't mean it's not a good first step for someone to just hear that someone's out there and they care. It's not enabling to give someone an internet hug and tell them, from personal experience, that getting professional help isn't as scary as it sounds, and it's worth it.
Again, it might just come down to the space you're spending time in. :/
