Did I make this in my sleep?

I feel this exact way about fandom, especially the amount of personal mental illness discussions in fandom places. I don't follow any personal tumblr blogs and none of my lj friends post that stuff but I still end up seeing it all the time. I'm glad people who need help are reaching out for it, but I'm not equipped to help them and it makes me uncomfortable to see that in fandom comms on LJ or reblogged by an RP blog or whatever. And honestly I could do without seeing anymore posts that are more bragging about having X number of diagnoses or some other ridiculous one-upping.

If you don't feel equipped to help them, why not move past those posts? Obviously they are helpful to some people, and I would rather they have a space, any space, where they can get even a little bit of support, than not. Why does it make you uncomfortable? It kinda makes it sound like you wish they'd stop just because of that, and...I do not think that's a good reason.

Also, if nobody you follow on LJ or tumblr post that stuff, where are you seeing it? Except maybe here, where it's very easy to simply scroll by threads that don't interest you?

There are places outside of fandom where people can get help for mental illnesses. In fact, of all the places where they can get help, fandom is the one that isn't ever on any of the lists of resources.

Why does it make you uncomfortable? It kinda makes it sound like you wish they'd stop just because of that, and...I do not think that's a good reason.
I don't think they should stop because it makes me uncomfortable, I think they should GET HELP. Posting on the internet about their diagnoses as if they're merit badges is not seeking help. Posting suicide threats in the fandom tags on tumblr is not seeking help. These are people who are tech-savvy so I don't believe that they don't know how to go to Google and type in "suicide hotline" and bring up a chat box or send a text or make a phone call to any of the thousands of places available for them, that they are limited to seeking help in fandom tags on tumblr.

And as for seeing it all the time? This is the one place it doesn't bother me because I've only seen it in GC, which is an acceptable place to start a conversation about just about any topic. And this is a community with a lot of the same people having discussions with each other, so it's easy for people to get to know each other and make a connection. From what I've seen of it happening here, the people that do it are specifically reaching out to the people of FS, not just throwing something out into the ether.

But posting about it in fandom tags on tumblr? Making a post in a fandom community on LJ? I don't understand why people do that, I only know that they do. And trust me: there is no good way to handle it when someone makes a post like that on a fandom comm on LJ.

My personal reasons for being uncomfortable with suicide threats posted all over fandom are my own. I don't wish people to kill themselves. But I do see a distinction between seeking help and posting suicide threats in fandom.

"Suicide threats" is a weird word, because it's impossible to tell if someone is really desperate or just being really, really emotionally manipulative.

But aside from that, I don't disagree with the fact that seeking RL help is the best thing. But wanting to find someone to talk to, figure out what's going on...nothing wrong with that. I guess I haven't really experienced any single individual constantly trying to get attention/using the internet as their therapist. People talk about it once or twice to help work through it, realize they need help, and then they go get help.

But then, this is the fandom space I spend the most time on.

It's not always easy to scroll past when you're in a fandom in which 4 out of five fun discussions turn into "but the mentally ill...". A lot of people who maybe need some attention for their disorders like to hijack debates and I agree, I feel neither equipped to help them nor enjoying the discussion anymore if that happens.

I haven't seen a lot of this but we probably just spend time in different places. I understand where you're coming from.

The problem is that if someone has a legit problem, people on the internet are not qualified to deal with it and be their therapist. In fact, they might end up giving well-meaning advice that actually makes things worse BECAUSE they are not therapists. That is not the kind of burden that should be placed on people who are just there to enjoy fandom.

Not only that, but there are a lot of people online who will encourage and enable someone in their unhealthy habits and try to convince them that it's normal. Someone who is suffering from severe social anxiety does not need people to "poor bb" them and tell them it's okay not to leave the house for a month at a time, they need to get professional help. The internet often becomes an echo chamber of perpetuating unhealthy behavior, which helps no one.

if it's something that's a mental illness or issue the first thing I say usually is "go get help". and I see a lot of people responding the same way.

Doesn't mean it's not a good first step for someone to just hear that someone's out there and they care. It's not enabling to give someone an internet hug and tell them, from personal experience, that getting professional help isn't as scary as it sounds, and it's worth it.

Again, it might just come down to the space you're spending time in. :/
