I feel like it's a combination of legitimately anxious making spaces where they feel comfortable and other people co-opting trigger warnings to mean "thing that makes me kinda uncomfortable."

Don't even get me started on the frivolous use of "triggers". What's that, this thing grosses you out slightly and you don't want to see it on your dash? Not a fucking trigger.

I think I stopped taking TWs seriously when someone was complaining about a lack of TWs on post-apocalypse media.

Or people who demand trigger warnings on fics already labeled "dark fics". FFS, if it is a dark fic then by its nature it is going to have disturbing crap in it, that is the whole point.

"a lack of TWs on post-apocalypse media"

....eh?

Yeah. Like, Fallout fanfic or something. What did they fucking expect?

F!S could be a weird place back in the day.

Oh, this was on FS back in the day? Hm...I don't recall that but I tend to skip gaming secrets....

Not sure if it was a gaming secret or not... it was years ago. Like, before I did my internship, I'm pretty sure -- and that was in 2010.

Last Halloween, someone requested a trigger warning on a post about ghosts because "spook" apparently used to be a slur against black people. Obviously some are still relevant, but goddamn, Tumblr, you need to go outside more.

Wowwwwww.

I'll tag things that I know people have common phobias of as "trigger warnings," ex. tw: spiders or tw: snakes. I don't tag them because "omg it might trigger someone and they'll have an episode or something," I tag them because I know someone following me might be afraid of it and don't want to scare them unintentionally. I've seen someone irl freak out at a harmless picture of a tarantula popping up on their dash before, so I know that if I can make something easy to Savior, it will help. But I don't needlessly slap tws on everything I post. I'm just being courteous to my followers who don't find certain animals cute.

Re: Fandom and Anxiety

(Anonymous) 2014-03-22 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
In that case, wouldn't tagging these posts with "spiders" and "snakes" suffice for the purpose of Savior-ing? What's the point of slapping "tw" on them? Freaking out at a picture of a tarantula is not the same thing as having a trauma trigger.

Re: Fandom and Anxiety

da

Here's the thing: "trigger warning" is becoming an internet synonym for "warning." You could try to popularize the use of plain old "warning" instead, but "tw" is short and easy, so people have gravitated to it. That's just what's happening now.

Re: Fandom and Anxiety

(Anonymous) 2014-03-22 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
That's exactly the complaint at the start of this thread, though? That use of "trigger" has become frivolous?

Incidentally those of us who warned about the over-use of trigger warnings diluting their effect and were shouted down by SJWs who kept claiming it was only polite to warn for everything because it took so little effort to type a few words and got no back up from the rest of the F!S comm, we totally called this situation. Can we be listened to next time the SJWs do something stupid please.

Agreed with anon above. Just tag "snake". I assure you if someone is scared of snakes, they will tumblr-save the "snakes" tag. I feel that putting "tw" in front of it diminishes the meaning of actual triggers. (Not that this isn't already happening, but don't contribute to it, please...)

Re: Fandom and Anxiety - I want to tell fandom at large "I told you so!"

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-03-23 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
I used to get all sorts of shit back in the day when I suggested people be a little more discretionary with their triggers and not use them for every single little thing, because I was afraid of most or all fics getting "trigger warnings" for passing mentions or even implications that would only be there if you were looking for them and wouldn't likely trigger anyone. Then fans would either be unable to touch huge portions of fanfic because of the risk of the trigger warnings despite most of them being fine, or having to constantly risk things and then trigger themselves because that's the only way to get into fanfic that isn't just stupid fluff pieces.

I am so sorry to see I was right about this coming. -_-
