"Fuck facts for the sake of drama". I just read an ACD Holmes fanfic that was about Watson faking the last stage of tuberculosis to give Holmes the taste of his own medicine (i.e. DYIN+FINA), and all I could think was "but it is horribly CONTAGIOUS??? Why does your Watson make himself look like such a spectacular DICK?"

This reading of DYIN annoys me, too. And I acknowledge that it is perfectly legitimate and that nobody is obliged to think that Holmes' behaviour is okay, but it still annoys me.

Actually, I have few narrative pet peeves. I'm usually very willing to accept the internal logic of a work of fiction (provided that it is otherwise good). The only real nope, I think, is the mother-child tropes that make abusive/otherwise unhealthy relationships sound OK. This makes me fume.

To be fair, the transmissibility of tuberculosis wasn't particularly well-understood during the Victorian era. Some people and groups were considered to be more prone to consumption than others, but there was some debate over whether the cause was environmental, behavioral, or something inherent in the person's constitution.

That said, I've read that story and was annoyed by it. Holmes and Watson were both horribly OOC and the whole thing was a weirdly unsatisfying read.

I think it was established to be contagious in the 1880s? The story is taking place well after that. I'm no expert on the history of medicine, however, so I can't claim to be particularly well-informed about the prevailing attitudes.

That said, I've read that story and was annoyed by it. Holmes and Watson were both horribly OOC and the whole thing was a weirdly unsatisfying read.

MTE :/ I don't know how it ended up on the main rec list. Especially since it's shippy. There must be a lot of quality shippy stuff out there.

That is a terribad reading of DYIN and it was handled very well, IMO, by the Granada series, even if it was embellished a lot from the original.
