TMI about authors that ruined their work for you?

[personal profile] seventh_seal 2014-03-22 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm reading Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and it's pretty much ruined for me because I keep thinking about Joyce smelling his wife's farts.

/I felt that you guys needed to know.

Well she's dead now, but she had weird ideas about ladies, relationships, consensual sex and homosexuality that I wish I hadn't found out about because most rereads became very :/ for me.

Her son is worse though...and he's a sucky writer.

...and for a laugh there is her good old Tent peg interview.

Yeah, she did have some very strange and rather creepy ideas about homosexuality. And there was a lot in the Pern series that put me off, like the way Benden Weyr was always right.

I've since realised that although I read most of her books I tended to only really like a couple of them. :S

Not TMI, but Jasper Fforde's moronic comments on fanfic made me unable to read his books anymore. Specifically this phrase, from his website: "My thoughts on Fan Fiction are pretty much this: That it seems strange to want to copy or 'augment' someone else's work when you could expend just as much energy and have a lot more fun making up your own." It's just so blindingly hypocritical considering the very premise of the Thursday Next books that it's retroactively ruined my enjoyment of his work.

Yeah, GRRM made similar comments. It didn't ruin ASOIAF for me, though - the declining quality of the latest book did. I don't know what higher praise there can be for an author than his fictional creation capturing readers' imagination to the point where they want to write about it, but clearly, some just don't get it.

Learning about the late Patrick Moore's political beliefs (however understandable given the circumstances of death of his fiancée in WW2) kinda ruined a lot of the enjoyment I had previously gotten from his educational works. Those intro-to books on astronomy were a big part of my childhood and a reason I love the field. I just can't go back and read them again without the knowledge that the man was a complete xenophobe regarding the German people spoiling my enjoyment. I've heard he also had some very backwards things to say about black people and gays too, but I refuse to pry too deeply into that for fear of spoiling what is left of my respect for a man that was in many other ways a formidable astronomer (the last of the true professional amateur-scientists) if the rumors turn out to be correct.

Well, yeah, I actually tend to gloss over this a bit since then I'd have to drop just about all 19th century authors - there's an undercurrent of racism, homophobia, misogyny, what have you, almost everywhere.

Well Patrick was no 19thC writer, he only died a year or so ago. Was on TV with his astronomy show right up to the end.

Finding out about Marion Zimmer Bradley's husband ruined her books for me.

What (or who) did he do?

He was a NAMBLA member and child molester who eventually went to prison for it. At the trial, it came out that she knew about it, but didn't have an issue with it as long as he didn't touch her kids.

ouch :(

Never read MZB, but thought the movie version of Mists of Avalon was one of the better Arthur movies.

Wow, that's awful. I wish I could do the death of the author thing in cases like this but once I've liked a book enough to look up something about it, I'm trapped in always keeping the author in mind.
