AYRT

I see a lot of the "dark" take on DP a lot too, and it can be just as irritating, I agree. Deadpool's a fun character with some more complex facets, and it's knowing when to balance those parts that can be hard. I'm a terrible writer myself, so I imagine DP must be a more difficult character to manage than other more clear-cut ones.

On Way: I actually really like Way's Deadpool. I wouldn't criticize anyone for basing characterization off of Way at all; he wrote a prominent series that I thought was very good. My criterion for judging characterization is tailored to my taste and I enjoy Kelly and such the most so I place that the highest, but I'm pretty flexible considering how many writer there's are for DP. So long as they avoid the pitfalls outlined above I'm fine with how characterization is explore.

The problem is that when it comes to fanfiction, you can usually tell when someone doesn't have much familiarity with the character or have made him OOC to some ridiculous extent (going back to the too random vs too dark thing). Maybe I just haven't been looking in the right places, but Spideypool fic really does fall far from the mark often.

To be quite honest, I've barely been in the comics scene for a long time now, so I don't know the latest with Deadpool in the past three or so years, and could be very off with what I do remember from before then. If that's the case, apologies.

Way was good for about... 20 issues. Then you got the general feeling he ran out of ideas, and then he started just throwing ideas and see what sticks.

IMO, the latest run is pretty good.
