Same here. I never think of a character in relation to me, and in fact the idea of doing so seems very strange. I'm interested in the character in the context of their world and their story, not because I personally see any bits of myself in them.

Yes, this. I mean, occasionally I might think, "Oh, I sympathise with X because I was never a good student/have this particular fault or virtue".
The one character I've ever related strongly to was dealing with issues that I was also going through when I read that book, so...
