Yeah. I feel kind of whiney for thinking this ("I wanna read about my OTP! Boo!") but tagging all pairings without hinting how they come into play is annoying.

In Sherlock fic, a John/Sherlock tag will usually get you straight up John/Sherlock - no complaints there - but if there's also a John/Mary tag, I must procede with caution. Sometimes the two pairings tagged together is another way of saying Sherlock/John/Mary (maybe in an attempt to distinguish an open relationship with John as the shared partner rather than a true threesome) which is awesome. Sometimes it means Mary dies or the fic takes place well in the future and she and John split up long ago and now we get John/Sherlock. Not ideal, but usually acceptable. Sometimes, it's about unrequited feelings on Sherlock's part or John being torn between the two and it's all very sad. That's not usually my cup of tea (I like happy-ending tea) but in theory, it can be done well.

Or, it could mean that Mary is an evil bitch who does horrible things to John or others or John flagrantly cheats on his wife with Sherlock. I don't care how well-written it is, I'm backbuttoning out of therr.

And hey, don't think you're safe just because your ship is the juggernaut in your fandom? Why, just the other day, I clicked on a story in which my OTP were trapped in a loveless marriage, but all that hinted at this was a summary saying "...but all was not well."

Yeesh. That would suck.

Though, to be fair, if your ship is a juggernaut, at least you've got a thousand other fics to chose from when one does something like this. :\

Oh totally. In that example I just rolled my eyes a bit and moved on to the next fic down the line, but I've been in situations in the past where my OTP was the rare pair getting shafted by a popular. This was even before tumblr and AO3 made "tagging" a real thing.
