When this has happened to me, the writer has sometimes got annoyed with comments about how disappointed the readers are that their OTP has been broken up for good in the story. I think they feel that as readers we aren't entitled to anything and as long as they tag if there's another partner, then that's OK.

My problem with this is that I don't have time. I'm just not interested in working through a fic, especially a long one, or WIP that I stick with, just for it to end with my OTP split up. I can be getting on with other fics, or even reading one of the many real life books on my list. Fanfic serves a comfort read purpose, I have no interest in reading it for literary merit.
