I hear you, OP.

But that's pretty much fandom at large. I have seen so many folks get so absurdly angry at the thought of including people who aren't white, thin, and able-bodied that it's ridiculous. Variety in casting isn't hurting anyone and the racist, hateful people need to pipe down.

Me too. Even friends who know I'm not white, and yet still get incredibly defensive and angry at the suggestion of casting non-white people. I've tried very hard to understand where they're coming from, but it still hurts a lot. I'm very sorry people are sick of this discussion and just want to throw in the towel but if we just stop talking about the topic forever that leaves us with what we have now-- with media that quite frequently decides that homogeneously white casts are The Way to Go because it's acceptable to everyone and nobody minds only seeing a tiny handful of non-white people in movies/TV/book covers/etc.

That's just not the media I want to see, and if I had a child, I'd feel incredibly sad if that's what they had to deal with growing up.

That shit is really dumb and does get me angry. Anyone who says that casting non-white people is a bad thing is someone who's opinions I am just not ever going to care about.

What also seems dumb to me is someone who calls people racists for making fancasts that don't cast non-white actors for characters with no race described, especially in settings which it's reasonable to suppose are set in or based on societies which are primarily white.

For the second part, but.... that's what it is. Making one race default is a symptom of racism.

That's like saying casting nothing but five year old kids doesn't make it underage. We're not saying you're a scum sucking pedobear, we're saying the cast you made is underage, and you probably did it because you like little kids in some way. Maybe you like writing for them more, or like that you don't have to shoehorn in sexual situations, or what, but you're displaying a preference. And a racial preference is still a preference based on race!

Shrug, accept that you're a little bit racist, decide if it's a Big Deal to you or not, but don't pretend that having a preference is exactly the same as not having a preference.
