This secret makes me very sad. You do not like yourself, OP? If not, then I hope you can get to a place where you do someday.

In any case, the identification may sometimes be only about certain aspects instead of the whole character. Personally I tend to identify with the emotional responses. If someone feels something I felt very strongly in the past, then I feel a connection and identification, even if the character is nothing like me overall.
