I dislike characters that remind me of myself when I was younger. I disliked them when I was younger, too.

But I've grown and I like myself (and, incidentally) characters that are like me, a lot more, now.

For me it depends on which parts of myself I see in the character I'm identifying with. Identifying with them isn't a requirement for liking a character but it is one category of characters I like, except the ones that seem to be nothing but all my worst traits thrown together in a way that makes me cringe.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-24 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't get how people can enjoy something if they don't identify with characters but eh.

I don't get how people can only enjoy something if they do identify with characters, so.

I've never really gotten the whole strongly identifying with a character thing. I guess there's aspects in some characters that I see in myself in, but it seems kind of limiting to both yourself and when analyzing a character to see them as yourself.

The characters I like are either written well, do things I think are really neat, or awful people, but in a way that's pretty cool.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-25 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Same here. It doesn't matter to me whether or not I see any of myself in a character, what matters is whether they're written well and are believable.

Then again, I just don't get the whole idea of projecting yourself onto a character period, because to me that sort of defeats the entire purpose of fiction. I don't want stories about people like me, I want stories that are about people and experiences that aren't anything like my real life at all.

characters you identify with are not necessarily the ones who are the most like you. you can identify with the way they handle problems, for example, or with something that happened to them, while having a completely different personality than the character.

This is very true.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-25 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
yes. I relate to the Vulcan ideal of rationality and control specifically because I make a terrible Vulcan and no one would ever mistake me for one. I relate to Sam Carter's cheerful awkwardness and Pepper Potts' commitment and competency, but I am neither a career military super-genuis scientist nor personal assistant to a billionaire inventor / metal suit guy. The list could go on basically forever.

Unless you're allergic to something in brownies, in which case, substitute the palatable dessert of your choice.

So this might be my ESL thing speaking, but doesn't identifying with a character not necessarily mean they have to be like you? They can be the complete opposite, but you can identify with them because of their situation/struggles/something. Or you only identify with one aspect?

As I said maybe I don't understand this right.

[personal profile] sarillia 2014-03-24 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's an ESL thing. That's my understanding of the term too.

I agree. I think it can be a variety of things. It can be because they're "like" you in the sense that they have similar values, traits, or demeanor, or even appearance might play into it. It can also mean that you've had similar experiences, similar relationships, similar thinking patterns, ways of handling situations, ways of being affected by things, etc.

This secret makes me very sad. You do not like yourself, OP? If not, then I hope you can get to a place where you do someday.

In any case, the identification may sometimes be only about certain aspects instead of the whole character. Personally I tend to identify with the emotional responses. If someone feels something I felt very strongly in the past, then I feel a connection and identification, even if the character is nothing like me overall.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-24 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I like Karkat and also I strongly identify with him.

One is not fundamentally the cause of the other
diet_poison: (Karkat - what the fuck)

[personal profile] diet_poison 2014-03-24 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, this makes me kinda sad, since I also have a lot in common with Karkat, and I adore him. (He's also my patron! :P)

I think part of it is that seeing an amazing person like Karkat embody some of my flaws reminds me that everyone is flawed and even people who have particularly...overt flaws like mine (being prickly, easily angered, stuff like that) can still be great people who are loved.

ETA: not saying I only like characters I ID with. I love way too many characters for that to be the case, lol.

Eh, plenty of people dislike characters that remind them too much of their own faults, hence why "weaklings" like Shinji get shat on so much by fandom. People want to project themselves onto self-assured badasses, not flawed characters.

I think a lot of people who use identify actually mean connect.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-25 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
But even so, a lot of people don't usually like characters with traits they see as flaws in themselves.

It seems there're a lot of people out there who only like characters when they see themselves favourably reflected in them, and this has never made sense to me. Fictional characters aren't supposed mirrors or figures of the reader or author, they're supposed to be people, and supposed to be liked or disliked on their own (and their authors') merits.

I sometimes like and sometimes dislike characters who remind me of myself; identifying with them has nothing to do with it.
I like characters based on how they're written (and acted, if that's applicable). I like characters who're exceedingly and deliciously villainous, and who're wonderful role models, and who are interesting people. And if the work allows me to see a character's thought process, I'll like that character even more.
If a character reminds me of myself in a favourable way, that's great, but I don't automatically like the character more (though I might like the author more, in this case). If he reminds me of myself in a negative way, I squirm a little, but it doesn't make me like the character any less.

When I was 16 and into NGE I hated Asukara at first because she was annoying and bossy and I identified more with Shinji. But then I realized my bad attitudes were reflected in her and that's why I hated her. The series also helped me to realize that later on I was struggling with heavy depression so I'm always thankful for that, even if I don't heavily identify with Shinji or Asuka anymore, that and the series as a whole has a lot of nuanced characters to identify with on some level and I appreciate that.

Hermione Granger is pretty much the only character I both see in myself and loathe at the same time. I get it.

If there ever existed a character like me, they would be the boring background character with maybe one random line, if they're lucky.

I think the real thing is can you sympathise with a character? They don't have to be like you, you just find something in them that you find draws your attention.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-25 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't worry, OP. Asuka hates herself, too.
